Svilen Stefanov is one of the main representatives and ideologists of the Sofia-based group XXL, founded in 1994. This circle of artists, including Houben Cherkelov, Kosyo Minchev, Georgi Tushev, Genadi Gatev, Ivan Kyuranov, among others, is infamous among the broad artistic community of connoisseaurs and collectors, and is often linked with the eponymous XXL gallery in Sofia from 1996 until 2003. The gallery’s often scandalous role in the art world is one, without which we could not be able to imagine Bulgarian art today. Nowadays the former culture terrorists branded as XXL are famous not only in Bulgaria, but also around the world. They participate in world biennales and work with some of the most prestigious galleries in Western Europe and America. Others are professors in the academic world and have a great impact on the young generation of upcoming artists. Svilen Stefanov is both an art historian and a painter, having experience and working in numerous mediums – from painting, installation, photography, and performance, to sound experimentation, and writing critiques and books, investigating the history of contemporary Bulgarian art.
Svilen Stefanov uses text in a way, directly implanted in the language of painting. His art is irresponsible and filled with parody. Just like everyone else from XXL, Svilen Stefanov believes that when it comes to art, a person is allowed to do anything that comes to his mind, fully conscious of his practical social irresponsibility, stemming from the charm of his perfect uselesness.
