On Saturday, June 1st, Mira Godard Gallery is pleased to open an exhibition of new paintings and sculptures by OTTO ROGERS. This is Rogers’ first solo exhibition in Toronto in ten years.

“BETWEEN VISION, DESIGN AND EXPRESSION there is no seam. Neither is one thing the cause and another the result. I have been referred to as a landscape painter and yet my efforts have concentrated on composition as poetic abstraction, an activity in which I make reference to nature but do not seek a landscape depiction. Rather, the search is for a heightened realm of reality. While developing the configuration on each canvas, panel or paper, my hope is to achieve a resolution that transcends the act of making, presenting the viewer with an elevated feeling, with a presence so palpable that time is suspended.”

OTTO ROGERS was born in 1935 in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. He attended the Saskatchewan Teachers College (1954). He received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education (1958) and a Masters in Fine Art (1959) from the University of Wisconsin. As Professor and Head of the Department of Art at the University of Saskatchewan (1959–1988), Rogers helped revive the Emma Lake Artist Workshop, Saskatchewan (1971–1987). From 1988 to 1998 Rogers lived in Haifa, Israel, where he served two, five-year terms as a Counselor member of the International Teaching Center at the World Centre for the Bahai Faith.

Considered one of Canada’s important painters, OTTO ROGERS has exhibited internationally for over five decades. Rogers' works are found in over 1500 international public, corporate and private collections including Art Gallery of Ontario, MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina; Mendal Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Montreal Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona, Spain; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Gallery of Canada; the National Gallery of Iceland; Bank of Montreal; General Foods and Scotiabank.

OTTO ROGERS lives and works in Southern Ontario.

In the front space, MKG127 is pleased to present Untitled (Photo Assemblage) by Winnipeg-based artist Dominique Rey.

The subject matters Dominique Rey explores focus on individuals and communities on the periphery of dominant culture. Rey enters their contexts to work from a position of inclusion that approaches, as closely as possible, the residing dynamics of social and psychological forces. Over the course of the last seven years, she has developed a project that explores questions of subjectivity among a group of catholic nuns, Les Filles de la Croix (Sisters of the Cross) in Canada, Brazil, Argentina and France. Untitled (Photo Assemblage) is based on a distillation and recontextualization of an extensive photographic archive in which themes of stillness, precarity and temporality are interwoven.

Dominique Rey is a multidisciplinary artist working in photography, video, painting, performance and installation. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and in the United States, Germany and Slovakia. She previously exhibited at MKG127 in the summer 2011 exhibition Go Figure.

The exhibition continues until June 29.

MKG127 is pleased to present She Walks Through Her Sunken Dream, an exhibition of new work by Toronto-based artist Geoffrey Pugen.

In Geoffrey Pugen‘s first exhibition at MKG127, he turns a reflexive eye toward the heterogeneous surfaces that assemble and constrain the artistic economy of body, self and object. Interweaving the silent movements of a fashionable gallerist with the robust installation of art objects, this two channel video narrativizes an accompanying installation, and explores the active dialectic between vision and gesture as a continual performance of self and group identity. Incorporating horror and the camp of David Bowie, the video, sculpture and adjacent walls coalesce into an uncanny, disjointed frame of experience, and the viewer becomes one of the reflective surfaces in an ongoing mystery.

 Geoffrey Pugen explores relationships between real and staged performance, the natural and the artificial, and tensions of virtual identity through altering and manipulating images. Working with video, film, performance and photography, Pugen renders situations that examine our perceptions of how history, documentation and simulation intersect. His videos and art have been exhibited nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of the K.M Hunter Award for interdisciplinary art. Pugen’s work Images (2012) can be seen in the lightbox on the exterior of MKG127.

The exhibition continues until June 29.

Pari Nadimi Gallery presents the second solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed Italian duo artists Botto + Bruno. A Featured Exhibition of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival.

Known for their constructed photographic and video works which, at times, used as material for creating their large installtions, Botto + Bruno continue to be interested in investigating the revolts, wishes and dreams of teenagers who live in the immense suburbs of our planet.

For their exhibition at Pari Nadimi Gallery, Botto+ Bruno present an installation of a large wallpaper, as the center piece of the exhibition, made out of A3 sized photocopies. The photocopies start with a text (a text cut up from Ballard‘s Kingdom Come) and then develop into drawings and finally in black and white photography. A number of small works with grey background and white framed, made of a drawing and a photo collage, are placed over the wallpaper. The installation also includes 3 large photographs. Every A3 and large photographs contains Botto + Bruno’s investigations of marginal places that are photographed, selected, archived, assembled, photocopied by the artists to make the final collage.

The installation is a project that starts from a raw objective data and then becomes material for moulding. It breaks up and rearranges itself to become a hint, the phantom of a landscape made of a horizon line reaches for the infinite, tries to get close to a musical score carrying the rhythm of its architectural fullness and emptiness, where nature and abandoned architectures meet and clash, memory and daily routine reactivate one another, the walking experience becomes part of the work.

Botto + Bruno have been part of the prestigious international biennales such as: 49th Venice Biennale curated by Harald Szeemann titled “House where nobody lives” (2001). 8th Shanghai Biennale (2010). Busan Biennale (Korea 2002).

Stephen Bulger Gallery is pleased to announce our third solo exhibition of work by Vid Ingelevics.

“Between art & Art” is based on observations Ingelevics made during research in the photography archives of public institutions in North America and Europe. Ingelevics (b. Toronto, Ontario, 1952) examined the historical work of usually anonymous museum staff photographers and noted how they and their work seemed to be situated somewhere between the “art” of photography – usually understood as technical practice - and the “Art” that was often their subject.

In the late 1990s, while working on the exhibition, “Camera Obscured,” which addressed the use of photography in public museums, Ingelevics noted that the uncertainty of the staff photographers’ institutional position seemed to extend to the images they produced. He was often unable to determine why some images were made or even what their original subjects were. In many cases, little or no information accompanied the images because, at the time of their creation, their meaning was held to be stable, factual and self-evident. For those who made and used the images, the question of meaning was simply obvious and no meta-data or captioning beyond the barest minimum seemed necessary.

As years passed and those responsible for the production and use of the images were no longer at the institution, the lived experience that produced a context and sustained a certain understanding of the images dissipated. Ingelevics’ fascination with what now seemed so contradictory – a large format, sharp, highly-detailed image that appeared to be so purposeful, but so oddly arbitrary – led him to attempt the “impersonation” of one of those long forgotten museum staff photographers. From 2000 to 2008 he returned to many of the same institutions and, using similar large format camera equipment, he produced contemporary images of these sites that might have been made years earlier.

Ingelevics is an artist, curator and educator based in Toronto. He has exhibited his art and curated exhibitions across Canada, the U.S. and Europe at both private galleries and public institutions. He is the recipient of various awards, including grants from the Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council. His photographs can be found in private and public collections, including the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Ottawa; The City of Toronto Archives, Toronto; the Museet for Fotokunst, Odense, Denmark and the Kunstmuseum Thun, Switzerland. He is currently an Associate Professor at Ryerson University, Toronto.

Toronto, ON – Opening on June 20 and running until August 10, 2013, the gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Duane Linklater, organized by Althea Thauberger.

Linklater’s exhibition, titled Learning, is anchored by two iconic photographs. The first depicts an Oka warrior, Richard Nicholas, standing on top of an overturned Sûreté du Québec vehicle, photographed during the Oka Crisis in 1990. The second is an image of Kurt Cobain playing guitar during Nirvana’s Unplugged session for MTV in 1993. Both of these images are several steps removed from their “originals”: Linklater tracked them down on the web, and re-photographed them from his computer screen using a digital SLR camera. What Linklater presupposes with this pairing are multiple potential meanings, but funnels them through two other elements that speak to the photographs’ “geographical origins and familial relationships”: a print by the late Ojibwa artist Benjamin Chee Chee (from which Linklater’s exhibition takes its name), and a custom-made wall work based on the logo of Ontario Northland, the primary transportation carrier for northern Ontario. While these four elements elide a straightforward explanation of the connections between them, each in turn extend Linklater’s investigations of ownership—from indigenous property rights to the artist’s fluid appropriations of signifiers between popular and indigenous cultures.

Duane Linklater is Omaskêko Cree, from Moose Cree First Nation in Northern Ontario and is currently based in North Bay, Ontario. He obtained a Bachelor of Native Studies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Alberta, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Video at the Milton Avery Graduate School of Arts at Bard College. Recent solo exhibitions include Something about Encounter, Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Thunder Bay, Ontario; Modest Livelihood (in collaboration with Brian Jungen), Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff, Alberta and the Reva and David Logan Centre Gallery, University of Chicago, Chicago; Beothuck Building, Or Gallery, Vancouver; and Raspberry Cargo, Family Business Gallery, New York City. His work has been included in group shows at The Power Plant, Toronto, Ontario; Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver; UBS Gallery, Redhook, New York City; The Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta; and Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton. Linklater is on the long list for the 2013 Sobey Art Award.

The Red Head Gallery is pleased to present Feed, an exhibition by artist Tonia Di Risio. During the summer of 2006, Di Risio traveled to a small town in Italy and recorded a series of women preparing a variety of local dishes in their kitchens. The videos were prompted by her desire to learn family recipes from her Italian relatives in the absence of a fluent common language by observing them working and cooking in their home kitchens. The video installation Feed includes single-channel pieces as well as a multi-channel projection highlighting an edited compilation of cooking sessions which bring together generations of women through the language of food, while also examining the tradition of passing and sharing of family recipes. Di Risio’s practice has involved an investigation of gendered domesticity in relation to housekeeping, home maintenance, and interior decoration primarily through time-based media including photography, video and audio recording.

A multi media artist who lived and worked in Halifax for 15 years, Tonia Di Risio relocated to Southern Ontario in 2012. She received a BA in Art and Art History from the University of Toronto and Sheridan College and an MFA from the University of Windsor. She has exhibited across Canada and has been the recipient of Canada Council and Nova Scotia arts grants.
