Caricature of the soul and inner similarity

Ernst Gombrich writes: “Caricature always tends to expressionism, since the artist distorts the victim’s features to express his idea of her.”

Eric Lacombe depicts the soul of the models beyond caricature.
Through his portraits, the artist departs from the traditional figurative style. By its projections, it is not a matter of identifying a person that has never been seen, but to reveal its intrinsic personality. His attempt to express invisible traits takes him so far from his characters’ externalappearance that they become unrecognizable.

The GA00 series is presented for the first time at the Artevistas gallery.
By exaggeration and distortion of its features, each of his creatures’portrait is the reflection of the author’s own feelings and emotions. A painting with disconcerting spontaneity emerges, that offers each portrait an extra dimension, both tragic and reflexive.

Eric Lacombe, painter and graphic designer, brings us to a world between fantasy and thaumaturgy.
Characters tortured, disfigured faces, or faces without mouths, they try to convey a message from the inside, yelling for us to decipher it according to our imagination.
Perfect curves finely drawn, as clean and precise snapshot of our worst nightmares. His characters take us to the depths of existential malaise. It is this concern that fuels our thinking, that makes us want to know more, feel closer to his world both sad and heartbreaking, magical and terrifying.

Presenting a selection of more than a hundred of works from 1945 to 2011, mostly coming from the personal collection of Antoni Tàpies but also complemented by works from the Collection of the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, the exhibition demonstrates the unceasing and even obsessive experimentation of the artist, and also stresses the development of his own iconography, his special vocabulary made up from signs, the materials, colors and everyday objects. Vicent Todolí, in his first foray into the work of Antoni Tàpies, pays much attention to the artist's affiliation with the tireless and restless avant-garde break,a pedigree that goes beyond the rules of museums and art history. As a consequence, this exhibition extends from the Fundació Antoni Tàpies to the National Museum of Art of Catalunya (MNAC).
