Named after the song by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, the « In a Sentimental Mood » exhibition offers a journey through every facet of love.

Gathering the work of eight artists from different generations and backgrounds – Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Jiri Kovanda, Myriam Mechita, Daphné Navarre, Marylène Negro, Jack Pierson, Alessandro Raho and Jimmy Robert – the exhibition conceived by Vanessa Desclaux explores the experience of love in its universality as well as ultimate singularity.

Through films, installations, sculptures and portraits, the exhibition brings together desire and longing, sensuality and melancholia, using contemporary imagery to express the complexity of human feelings. By drawing on sounds, visual or gestural codes, each exhibit develops a unique approach to exploring the limitations of language in expressing the depth of an emotion.

Reinventing the love letter, tapping the poetic possibilities of an object, conjuring a loving embrace – these are some of the ways chosen by the artists to capture the many moods of romantic reverie.

Born in 1981, Vanessa Desclaux works as an independent curator, but is also the author of essays on art and a regular contributor to the specialized press in Europe. Currently an art history teacher at Dijon’s Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Art, she is also pursuing a PhD at the University of London’s Goldsmiths College.

On the occasion of the «Nouvelles Vagues» season organised by Palais de Tokyo, Jérôme Poggi has invited Matteo Lucchetti to curate the first show of Société Réaliste at the gallery.
Entitled «Thelema of Nations», the exhibition gathers recent works by Société Réaliste making a connection between the literary utopia of Thelema described for the first time in François Rabelais’s «Gargantua», and the geopolitical reality of the United Nations.
Société Réaliste is a cooperative created by Ferenc Gròf (HU, 1972) and Jean-Baptiste Naudy (FR, 1982) in 2004. Jeu de Paume (Paris), Ludwig Museum of Budapest and the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Bucharest has dedicated large exhibitions to their work in 2011/2012.

This exhibition, comprising over two hundred works, offers a reflection on the main themes that structured German thinking from 1800 to 1939. It places artworks and their artists—including Caspar David Friedrich, Paul Klee, Philipp Otto Runge and Otto Dix—in the intellectual context of their time, and confronts them with the writings of great thinkers, chief among whom is Goethe.

German history from the late 18th century to the eve of World War II is marked by the difficulty of establishing political unity at a time when the concept of a Europe of nations was gaining hold. A multi-faith country characterized by geographical discontinuity, the instability of its borders and different or even antagonistic political and cultural contexts, Germany needed to establish the underlying unity of all Germans, from Bavaria to the Baltic, from the Rhineland to Prussia.

The concept of Kultur, inherited from Enlightenment thought, seemed most likely to constitute the breeding ground from which a modern German tradition could emerge. The Napoleonic occupation fostered awareness of this unity and provided the political background for the beginnings of Romanticism, at the start of our timeline—while at its end, the rise of Nazism highlighted the tragic dimension of this concept, without managing to destroy it. The exhibition analyzes the role of the fine arts, from Romanticism to New Objectivity, in this period of great artistic innovation that sought to invent a new German tradition.
