A site-specific installation by Lebanese artist Raed Yassin, curated by Amanda Abi Khalil. ‘Noon’ is a series of eight photographs produced by Yassin between 2010 and 2011. Shown together with a new sound piece, they compose the site-specific installation entitled ‘Postponed Noon’, which transforms the connotations of both spaces: the square outside on the one hand and the space inside the vitrine on the other.

Taken from different bedroom windows in Beirut, these eight photographs conjure the atmosphere of a latent dream the artist finds himself in when he wakes up – the moment when perception is blinded by daylight around noon, and becomes by alchemy a protracted contemplation, a musing daydream.

Both parts of the installation alter the perception of the space in which they are placed. The eight windows in the photographic series are confined to an interior space, although the images open to an exterior cityscape, a distant one: the city of Beirut. In the square, a 24-hour-long sound piece recorded in the artist’s apartment in Beirut matches this intimate terrain of reverie, albeit interrupted at times by mundane sounds that transform Vitrine into an apartment.

‘Postponed Noon’ invites us to this “escapade of imagination” through the “finesses of experience of intimacy”, in which the intimate space activated by the sound piece opens up to a view of a strange yet familiar city, appearing blurred through eight windows.

Inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space, the concept of this indoor-outdoor installation confuses the obvious geometry and dialectics of division between outside and inside when brought into play in metaphorical domains.

“In any case, inside and outside, as experienced by the imagination, can no longer be taken in their simple reciprocity; consequently, by omitting geometrical references when we speak of the first expressions of being, by choosing more concrete, more phenomenologically exact inceptions, we shall come to realize that the dialectics of inside and outside multiply with countless diversified nuances.” Gaston Bachelard, “The Dialectics of Outside and Inside” in The Poetics of Space.

BIOGRAPHY

Raed Yassin was born in Beirut in 1979. He graduated from the theatre department at the Institute of Fine Arts in Beirut in 2003. An artist and musician, Yassin‘s work often originates from an examination of his personal narratives and their workings within a collective history, through the lens of consumer culture and mass production. He has exhibited and performed his work in numerous museums, festivals and venues across Europe, the Middle East, the United States and Japan, including the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo (2013), the Beirut Art Center (2013), the New Museum in New York (2012), Kalfayan Galleries, Athens (2011), Museum of Photography Thessaloniki (2011); “Sharjah Biennial 10” (2011), Delfina Foundation in London (2010-2011) where he has completed a residency program, “Manifesta 8” in Murcia (2010-2011), Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (2011), De - Ateliers in Amsterdam following a 2-year residency, “Home Works 5” in Beirut, (2010) and Photo Cairo 4 (2008). Upcoming shows include: Singapore Art Museum (2013) and the 4th Thessaloniki Biennial of Contemporary Art (2013). Yassin was awarded the Fidus Prize for The Best of Sammy Clark at Beirut Art Center’s Exposure (2009), the Abraaj Capital Art Prize (2012), the AFAC grant for production (2010), the YATF grant for production (2008 & 2012) and the Cultural Resource grant for production (2008). Yassin is one of the organizers of IRTIJAL Festival, and has released 11 music albums and founded the production company Annihaya in 2009. He is also a founding member of “Atfal Ahdath” a Beirut based art collective. He currently lives and works in Beirut and represented by Kalfayan Galleries, Athens.

WW Gallery is pleased to present Broughton & Birnie’s The Forger’s Tale: The Quest for Fame & Fortune, an immersive installation and exhibition chronicling the tragic events that led to the demise of twentieth century forger Georg Bruni.

Focusing upon the events surrounding the sale of a forged Picasso painting to a Nazi collector, the show takes a detail from the original Forger’s Tale exhibition, about the life and times of Georg Bruni held at the Crypt Gallery in May 2012. Weaving fact and fiction in a richly detailed forgery of their own, Broughton & Birnie play with plausibility and authority in a post-internet world of self-constructed realities and identities.

The Quest for Fame & Fortune presents an experiential narrative, in which the viewer is led through Bruni’s story room by room. From the documentary cinema kiosk, to the Collectors and Regenerate Rooms surveying German art from the Berlin Dada exhibition and the Degenerate Art Show, and finally to the wild and grotesque performance of the Cabaret; the spirit and atmosphere of Bruni’s Berlin is evoked.

Akin to the information overload encountered on the vast data resource of the web, the experience of Bruni’s world overwhelms us. Pandering to an information hungry and status-obsessed society, Broughton & Birnie offer a sprawling maze of information within which the viewer is able to pick up and follow individual threads. But as counterfeiters they have also left a deliberate trail of deceit. Visual clues including familiar faces from reality television and politics, a-historical props and incongruous paraphernalia: all allow the audience to peel back layers of forged historicity.
Within Broughton & Birnie’s retelling of Germany’s social & political upheavals, the astoundingly creative artistic culture, and the legendary nightlife of the short-lived Weimar Republic, we find parallels with contemporary life that make for an unnerving satire. Combining archive material and old photographs with the manipulative processes of new technology Broughton & Birnie capture the spirit of a past era whilst performing a wicked parody of current pop culture and politics: forcing the two worlds to collide in a flagrant deception.

Concerts and Entertainment events to take place 18-21h 1, 15 and 29 June with a closing party scheduled for 17-22h 13 July.

About Broughton & Birnie
Kevin Broughton and Fiona Birnie have been working and exhibiting together since 2001. They are interested in the influence of the media and technology on society - its role in our perception and relationship with the real world. The technique of collage is at the heart of their work providing an essential metaphor and means of expression for the myriad individual constructs of contemporary reality.

Keep Your Timber Limber (Works on Paper) explores how artists since the 1940s to the present day have used drawing to address ideas critical and current to their time, ranging from the politics of gender and sexuality to feminist issues, war, censorship and race. Stretching from fashion to erotica, the works can all be viewed as being in some way transgressive, employing traditional and commercial drawing techniques to challenge specific social, political or stylistic conventions.

The exhibition brings together the work of eight artists: Judith Bernstein, Tom of Finland, George Grosz, Margaret Harrison, Mike Kuchar, Cary Kwok, Antonio Lopez and Marlene McCarty.

Curated by Sarah McCrory, the exhibition draws on the way artists turned to the commercial realms of comics, fashion and illustration to revitalise drawing within the visual arts - many of the works in Keep Your Timber Limber (Works on Paper) were originally produced for a commercial context. One common aspect of these varied practices is a high level of technical skill - these are artists who often confounded critics of their subject matter unable to condemn their technique. Choosing to step outside the boundaries of social acceptability, the works in Keep Your Timber Limber (Works on Paper) comprise modest proposals and trenchant political gestures.

Points of Departure features new commissions resulting from six residencies in London and Ramallah by British and Palestinian artists: Jumana Emil Abboud, Bashar Alhroub, Bisan Abu Eisheh, Jeremy Hutchison, Olivia Plender, and Nathan Witt. Devised with two curators-in-residence, Mirna Bamieh and Rebecca Heald, the works in Points of Departure are a thoughtful exploration of the anthropological concept of liminality. From the Latin word līmen, meaning ‘a threshold’, liminality is a condition in which one’s sense of identity is diffused, leading not only to states of dislocation and disorientation, but also to the possibility of new perspectives. Residencies can also be understood as a ‘liminal’ state between time and place. But what happens when the liminality of the residency is entwined with a place like Palestine, which is defined by its own political ambiguity and contestation?

In the face of globalisation, but without succumbing to false universalism, all Points of Departure artists undertook varieties of research to reveal a range of partial truths. In this exhibition they are presented in different mediums including performance, video, installation, drawings, and intervention.

Following the presentation of the first outcomes of Points of Departure in Ramallah in January and February 2013, the exhibition travels in an expanded form to the ICA, as one of the highlights of the 2013 Shubbak Festival in London.

Olia Lialina and Dragan Espenschied: One Terabyte of Digital Age

The cultural foundation for today‘s web was not created by Tim Berners-Lee, Mark Zuckerberg or Tom Anderson, but by its users, inside the tiny spaces they were assigned by Internet Giants.
The exhibition One Terabyte Of Kilobyte Age showcases thousands and thousands of amateur home pages from the free web hosting service Geocities, from the second half of the 1990s. Established in 1995 and purchased by Yahoo in 1999, Geocities was suddenly shut down by Yahoo in 2009. Realising its cultural significance, the Internet Archive team managed to rescue an incomplete portion of Geocities which now lives on as a massive downloadable Torrent file.

Over the period of the show, Olia Lialina and Dragan Espenschied will present a stream of snapshots of this lost city and its archival ruins, documenting the visual culture of the web and the creativity of its users. The project provides a glimpse into web publishing when users were in charge of design and narration in contrast to the automated templates of Facebook, YouTube and Flickr.

About the artists:

Moscow-born artist Olia Lialina has, for the past decade, produced many influential works of network-based art: My Boyfriend Came Back from the War (1996), Agatha Appears (1997), First Real Net Art Gallery (1998), and Last Real Net Art Museum (2000). Currently she is a professor at Merz Akademie in Germany. Lialina writes on digital culture, net art and web vernacular.

Dragan Espenschied, born in Germany. His music and online art has received international acclaim. He co-founded the home computer band Bodenständig 2000 that toured and released records throughout Europe and the USA. He has also won the Webby Awards People’s Voice NET ART (2004), and the ZKM International Media Art Award (2001).

Since 2002 Olia and Dragan have worked together. Among their collaborations are Zombie and Mummy (2002-2003), Midnight (2006), and Online Newspapers (2004, 2008, 2013), Digital Folklore Reader (2009). Individually and as collaborative partners, the work of both artists has been exhibited extensively online and at venues including Ars Electronica, Linz; the New Museum, New York; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; Transmediale, Berlin; Havana Biennial, Cuba; ACAF, Alexandria; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; ABC Gallery, Moscow; ZKM, Karlsruhe; Madison Square Park, New York.

Claire Aho (b. 1925, Finland) is a pioneer of Finnish colour photography. This will be the first exhibition of Aho’s work outside of Finland. Grandchild of the author Juhani Aho and the painter Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, Aho established her own commercial studio in the early 1950s working across a broad range of industries including editorial, advertising, magazine covers and fashion. The exhibition will include a large selection of original Finnish lifestyle magazines with Aho’s cover photographs and up to seventy images from her archive. Saturated with colour and full of humor her images, although distinct to Finland and to the period, still remain relevant to young practitioners today.

Founded in 1937, Mass Observation is one of the most intriguing social survey projects of the 20th century. Formed by a group of British writers, artists, poets and anthropologists, the organisation in its original guise aspired to gain insight into the lives, opinions and daily thoughts and habits of the British people. Using a combination of recording methods drawn from science and arts, they hoped this new information would lead to a deeper understanding of everyday life and create a more democratic and unified society. Mass Observation: This is Your Photo will be the first extensive display of the archive’s visual legacy, locating photography at its centre. The exhibition is curated by Russell Roberts, Reader in Photography, European Centre for Photographic Research, University of Wales, Newport.

An exhibition focusing on the publication Deeds Not Words, a multi-layered documentary project by Mark Neville about the people of Corby, Northamptonshire and the environmental issues provoked by the court case concerning ‘ The Corby 16’.

Between 1985 and 1998 eighteen children were born in Corby with birth defects, said to have been the result of harmful substances generated during the council reclamation of the local steelworks. Neville’s photographs document daily life in Corby and the individual claimants involved in the subsequent court case.

First published in 2010, Deeds Not Words was available only to the respective environmental, local, legal and scientific bodies to whom its content was addressed. This exhibition will be the first public showcasing of these photographs and will document the book’s journey as it reaches these various constituencies and is implemented as an advocacy tool to promote policy change. The exhibition is curated by David Campany.

Pieces on display will aim to challenge long-held stereotypes while addressing issues such as gender roles, domesticity, the body and the identity of individuals within the family unit. Photographers and artists taking part include Janine Antoni (b. 1964, Bahamas), Elina Brotherus (b. 1972, Finland), Elinor Carucci (b. 1971, Israel), Ana Casas Broda (b. 1965, Spain), Fred Hüning (b. 1966 Germany), Leigh Ledare (b. 1976, USA), Hanna Putz (b. 1987, Austria). Following six months as the Nina Stewart Artist in Residence in the South London Gallery’s Outset Artists’ Flat, Eoghan Ryan presents a multi-faceted installation of new work in the first floor galleries. Drawing on his everyday encounters with people, places, animals and objects in the course of his stay, Ryan translates his experiences of them into an assemblage of disparate and often obscure references. Offering glimpses of the thought processes binding these elements together, a short film exposes the practice by which they were selected and lures us into its bizarre logic.

The Nina Stewart Artist's Residency with the South London Gallery and SPACE is funded by The Nina and Roger Stewart Charitable Trust, with additional support from Bloomberg.
