Eleven is pleased to present new work by Harry Cory Wright. Hey Charlie is a celebration of over fifty years of Cory Wright‘s involvement with a particular bend in a river and the field beside it. These joyful images are the culmination of a lifetime of experience of the place in which he grew up and to which he has stayed connected throughout his life.

The sense of the impulsive, and indeed mischief, is reflected in the title. Cory Wright calls his brother’s name - a child’s shout, an adult‘s beckoning - to coax him into causing a stir in a place they know so well. They are allowed once again to be little gods. They create interruptions in the otherwise placid landscape; set off rockets into an evening sky; peer inquisitively into a haze of smoke creeping around a river bend. These striking and transient impulses, and the photographs in which they are captured, were intended to shake off the burden of the past and of nostalgia, and to provoke the making of new memories; to re-imagine, reshape and reawaken a much-loved place.

Cory Wright has thus added a new dimension to the adventurous approach, reflected in his series Place in Mind (2010) and Journey Through the British Isles (2007), to uncovering the landscape and infusing it with prospect. This personal process has always involved the physical engagement with landscape in a way that echoes Richard Long while the jubilant, spur of the moment nature of the photographs recall the work of Jacques Henri Lartigue. However, here Cory Wright’s playful tone has a new and heightened focus: how our views of a well-known place might change over time as life adapts and the place adapts with it - the feelings of the small child still contained within those of the adult. Opportunity is always there.

For many years Cory Wright has worked exclusively with the large 10 x 8 inch plate camera. In this new series he mixes this approach with high end digital cameras that allow him to explore the opportunities afforded by post production and print. He sees these two approaches as complementary. “The particular - and somewhat self-important - nature of the 10 x 8 inch negative has always elevated the picture taking process and given weight to the final piece. I have found that working with digital cameras has allowed me to retain the importance of ’being there‘ and the photographic element of ’witness', and to add a further distillation of those aspects in post-production. In this series, where there is such a blend of real and fantasy, this combination of working methods has been invaluable”.

Harry Cory Wright was born in 1963 and lives and works in Norfolk. His work is currently included in Landmark: The Fields of Photography at Somerset House, London (2013) which has been curated by renowned William A. Ewing, the noted photographic curator and historian, and also features work by Darren Almond, Elger Esser, Hirsohi Sugimoto and Thomas Struth amongst others.

Keep Your Timber Limber (Works on Paper) explores how artists since the 1940s to the present day have used drawing to address ideas critical and current to their time, ranging from the politics of gender and sexuality to feminist issues, war, censorship and race. Stretching from fashion to erotica, the works can all be viewed as being in some way transgressive, employing traditional and commercial drawing techniques to challenge specific social, political or stylistic conventions.

The exhibition brings together the work of eight artists: Judith Bernstein, Tom of Finland, George Grosz, Margaret Harrison, Mike Kuchar, Cary Kwok, Antonio Lopez and Marlene McCarty.

Curated by Sarah McCrory, the exhibition draws on the way artists turned to the commercial realms of comics, fashion and illustration to revitalise drawing within the visual arts - many of the works in Keep Your Timber Limber (Works on Paper) were originally produced for a commercial context. One common aspect of these varied practices is a high level of technical skill - these are artists who often confounded critics of their subject matter unable to condemn their technique. Choosing to step outside the boundaries of social acceptability, the works in Keep Your Timber Limber (Works on Paper) comprise modest proposals and trenchant political gestures.

Centred on the theme of the resort as an idealised place to get away to, this exhibition looks at ideas of escapism. Resort will question the notion of holidays as both a suspended reality and an escapism from the everyday chores of life.

Nick Carrick: ‘When I paint I escape the everyday monotony of life and enter a suspended reality, my own resort. These works are a metaphor for escapism. They are subjective as well objective. They represent and reflect a society that wants to try and block out reality, but you can never escape yourself.’

Paul Greenleaf: The British painter JMW Turner often visited the seaside town of Margate and described the skies as ‘the loveliest in all Europe.’ This inspired Greenleaf to use Margate as a starting point for Optimism Revisited, a series of new compositions derived from old postcards and new photographs depicting idealised skies. In each example the sky has been manipulated to appear almost uncannily blue and flawless as a relief to grey reality. These perfect skies act as a hope for the future whilst simultaneously implying themes of nostalgia and memory. A selection of Optimism Revisited skies feature in Arty 31: White.

Sharon Kivland: 'For some years now I have been following, the holidays taken by Sigmund Freud. I call my holidays that are not quite holidays “Freud on Holiday”. To undertake my holiday work efficiently I have read many rail and ferry timetables of Europe. I have produced two modest booklets that recount railway-related scenes and incidents in the works of Freud, under the title Reisen. This is also the title of three series of photographs, three very short films, and a set of screen-prints derived from guidebooks, which advertise the attractions of Swiss hotels, including the provision of a darkroom in which the keen amateur photographer may develop holiday pictures of alpine peaks, mountain lakes, and the steamy emissions of trains.’

Points of Departure features new commissions resulting from six residencies in London and Ramallah by British and Palestinian artists: Jumana Emil Abboud, Bashar Alhroub, Bisan Abu Eisheh, Jeremy Hutchison, Olivia Plender, and Nathan Witt. Devised with two curators-in-residence, Mirna Bamieh and Rebecca Heald, the works in Points of Departure are a thoughtful exploration of the anthropological concept of liminality. From the Latin word līmen, meaning ‘a threshold’, liminality is a condition in which one’s sense of identity is diffused, leading not only to states of dislocation and disorientation, but also to the possibility of new perspectives. Residencies can also be understood as a ‘liminal’ state between time and place. But what happens when the liminality of the residency is entwined with a place like Palestine, which is defined by its own political ambiguity and contestation?

In the face of globalisation, but without succumbing to false universalism, all Points of Departure artists undertook varieties of research to reveal a range of partial truths. In this exhibition they are presented in different mediums including performance, video, installation, drawings, and intervention.

Following the presentation of the first outcomes of Points of Departure in Ramallah in January and February 2013, the exhibition travels in an expanded form to the ICA, as one of the highlights of the 2013 Shubbak Festival in London.

Plastique Fantastique Communique: YOUR EXTINCTION OUR FUTURE!

PHENOME (= hu-man) quickly-became-ghost: wasted, sunken-eye-and-cheek. Pallor? That-of-wax-ed-fruit. This PHENOME-ghost thinks it is something but can-no-see that it is NO-THING but a HALL-LOOO-SIN-NASHUN (or, precisely, echo-of-a-feedback-loop). And whaoooooooooooo! this old loop can run-and-run… but not for-ever. PHENOME can only spin like an invert-ted-top. An eye it is: spiked on the sharp end of a cone pointed skywards (upright-and-uptight until entropy cools-its-chops… which blows sooner than you think my friend). But NOW, finally, PHENOME-time really is a running out. Yes siree! FINALLY REALLY RUNNING OUT! PHENOME-time not enough to run the infinite space of the (what-is) CLOUD. Too much plug-in. Too much playing with the sticky-icky lube-tube/fuzzy-insertion-slot. Too much connect-connect-connect-connect. Yes siree, TOO many prosthetics broke the back of this poor-old-PHENOME-circuitry.

What next then? NATURAL HISTORY: CLOUD gives birth to new animals. Feedback loop mutates/generates/inverts (less reverb-and-delay, more time-stretch-tool). All filters are visible and all connections are marked for these CREE-TURES (a host of parasites and, FINALLY: NEUROPATHEME). And they shall bring WAR: a war on PHENOME-ghosts until all is dead-and-dusted, until all transparent apparitions are circled, arrowed, filled in, made opaque, redacted.

No winners. Who survives? FUX-OWLING for one. All born flushed-and-unplugged, swimming the continuum, like water-in-water. And NEUROPATHEME no doubt a.k.a. subject-without-experience, all made sticky and ready to receive, ree-kiwired and re-wired, a confirmed neurocentric, bound-and-gagged, spoken-for-and-babel-rush. First NEUROPATHEME redacts the letter ‘I’ (followed shortly afterwards by all the other vowels). 2ND-GN N-PTH is born, and is first to sing (in a new loop of its own making): YR XTNCTN R FTR!

Formed by a group of British writers, artists, poets and anthropologists, the organisation in its original guise aspired to gain insight into the lives, opinions and daily thoughts and habits of the British people. Using a combination of recording methods drawn from science and arts, they hoped this new information would lead to a deeper understanding of everyday life and create a more democratic and unified society. Mass Observation: This is Your Photo will be the first extensive display of the archive’s visual legacy, locating photography at its centre. The exhibition is curated by Russell Roberts, Reader in Photography, European Centre for Photographic Research, University of Wales, Newport.

An exhibition focusing on the publication Deeds Not Words, a multi-layered documentary project by Mark Neville about the people of Corby, Northamptonshire and the environmental issues provoked by the court case concerning ‘ The Corby 16’.

Between 1985 and 1998 eighteen children were born in Corby with birth defects, said to have been the result of harmful substances generated during the council reclamation of the local steelworks. Neville’s photographs document daily life in Corby and the individual claimants involved in the subsequent court case.

First published in 2010, Deeds Not Words was available only to the respective environmental, local, legal and scientific bodies to whom its content was addressed. This exhibition will be the first public showcasing of these photographs and will document the book’s journey as it reaches these various constituencies and is implemented as an advocacy tool to promote policy change. The exhibition is curated by David Campany.

This exhibition will explore representations of motherhood as seen through the works of seven contemporary artists. Pieces on display will aim to challenge long-held stereotypes while addressing issues such as gender roles, domesticity, the body and the identity of individuals within the family unit. Photographers and artists taking part include Janine Antoni (b. 1964, Bahamas), Elina Brotherus (b. 1972, Finland), Elinor Carucci (b. 1971, Israel), Ana Casas Broda (b. 1965, Spain), Fred Hüning (b. 1966 Germany), Leigh Ledare (b. 1976, USA), Hanna Putz (b. 1987, Austria). The exhibition is curated by Susan Bright in collaboration with the Foundling Museum, London.
