In the exhibition 24- SPACES at Malmo Konsthall Lilith Performance Studio presents two large scale performance by Donna Huanca and Yingmei Duan where the audience is invited to take part in different ways.
Donna Huanca (b.1980 in Chicago, USA) - Raw Material
Raw Material is a 6-week long performance where Donna Huanca is exposed to the audience’s gaze inside a glass vitrine without seeing them. The audience is given the opportunity to be Huanca’s raw material and invited one by one into the vitrine, under certain rules and agreements. In Huanca’s studio they become an object, a model, a voice, or a conversation partner. All visitors at the Konsthall are asked to bring a gift, like an object, piece of clothing or fabric to contribute and initiate a starting point for engagement.
Yingmei Duan (b. 1969 in China) - Happy Yingmei
Through a small doorway you step into Duan’s poetic wonderland, which is enacted in a dark forest glade, where Duan herself is standing and handing out handwritten wishes and requests one by one to the visitors. Happy Yingmei is inspired by Oscar Wilde’s fairytale The Happy Prince – a story about a golden statue that befriends a swallow. Together they bring happiness to others, in life as well as in death.
Happy Yingmei was produced by Lilith Performance Studio and first shown at Lilith Performance Studio’s Performance Event in 2011. The performance has also been shown at the Hayward Gallery in London 2012 and will be shown at the 19th Biennale of Sydney in 2014.
