For his first solo exhibition in the US, Nick Relph presents his video Thre Stryppis Quhite Upon ane Blak Field (2010), first shown at the 2011 Venice Biennale. The film connects the history of tartan with the Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons and the artist Ellsworth Kelly. Relph’s interest in the material and social effects of objects is further explored through a series of new Steinway piano templates.
Long considered one of the greatest painters of the Abstract Expressionist period, Agnes Martin’s quiet, barely there colors and marks were influential on the development of Minimalism. Martin’s Aspen Art Museum exhibition features a selected survey of works that spans her career between 1957 and 2003. Tending toward geometric structures, Martin’s deeply held convictions about the emotive content of her work underlie its apparent reticence and austerity of form.
