Roman Susan presents a portrait-oriented exhibit of paintings, June 22 through July 20.
 
Featured artists will include Andrew Mazorol and Tynan Kerr, Dakota Temte and Dylan Alverson, Colin Marx, and Lauren Roche.
 
All featured artists are currently based in our Midwestern sibling, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Tracing a chronological arc of almost a century, this exhibition showcases both familiar and lesser-known works from the Smart Museum’s collection of American art. It presents approximately eighty works—paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and photographs—by American artists, while exploring national context and changes in art between 1850 and 1940.
 
The exhibition will make a subtle nod to the hundredth anniversary of the 1913 Armory Show with paintings by two key artist-organizers, Arthur Davies and Walt Kuhn. Among other highlights are a wealth of survey photographs—including exceptional panoramas of the American West—taken by Timothy O’Sullivan and William Bell in the 1860s and 70s; celebrated etchings by James McNeill Whistler; landscape paintings by Tonalist master George Inness; and photographs by Walker Evans.

CHICAGO ARTISTS COALITION ANNOUNCES
3rd ANNUAL STARVING ARTIST: “The experiential artist and culinary event of the year”
 
CHICAGO, IL—Chicago Artists Coalition, the 39-year old non-profit dedicated to building a creative marketplace and strengthening Chicago’s vibrant arts community by its direct services for individual artists, is pleased to announce details for its third annual Starving Artist extravaganza. Starving Artist pairs celebrated local artists with renowned Chicago chefs who collaborate on edible and aesthetic presentations. The event will take place Saturday June, 29, 2013 from 7pm to midnight at CAC’s West Loop / Fulton Market gallery space. Tickets are required. All proceeds benefit the Coalition’s mission and programs.
 
Like past events, this year’s Starving Artist features a star-studded roster of artists and chefs who are paired to work collaboratively in the months leading up to the event. Their assignment: to inspire each other to create an edible “installations” to be enjoyed by the crowd and new works of art to be auctioned off the night of the event. This year‘s event will also feature hand-crafted Hennessy Black cocktails, created just for the occasion, including a cocktail and a work of art born from mutual inspiration between artist Marissa Lee Benedict and Hennessy Black Brand Architect Benjamin Newby.

Artist and chef pairs will be introduced via a performance processional by The Power of Cheer. Cocktails, beer and wine will flow freely throughout the evening, alongside a series of artisanal food installations to complement the artist + chef offerings.

All proceeds from Starving Artist support CAC’s mission and programs, including the Maker Grant which is funded in part by a portion of ticket sales. This grant provides critical unrestricted support for a local Chicago artist and will be distributed in Spring 2014.
