A painter and draftsman by calling and choice, Gerard Ellis establishes an interesting dichotomy between the practice of painting and social critique. His pictorial work is highly expressive and vigorous for those who directly or indirectly participate in the multiple strata of the contexts of which this artist speaks. The violence, corruption and lack of willpower characteristic of our times are central topics of his meticulous pictorial work. There is a studied connection and interdependence between what is his work and what constitutes his life experiences, which translates into a certain underlying politicization of life’s experience. Self-referential and sometimes autobiographical, his dynamic yet intensely personal and authentic compositions serve on dual levels; not only are they effective in presenting the viewer with truncated iconoclastic narratives, but they also possess a strong visual vocabulary of technical styles.
Ellis competes in a direct relation to the animal, this time, no longer domestic (an owl, a cybor-dog, among others) with the man and are constant companions to the figures in the paintings. Equipped with a dramatic quality, the plastic movement of each one of the works speaks of speed and stillness, paralysis and aggression, being the diachronic dichotomy of the mental movement of the spectator.
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1976, he graduated from the National School of Fine Arts and the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. Selected to be part of the “S-Files”, the 6th edition of the El Museo del Barrio Biennial in NY, 2011. Has been recognized with three awards of Excellence by The Society of News Design, 2007-2008. In 2007 was invited to be part of the IX edition of the Cuenca International Biennial, Ecuador. His work has been exhibited in group shows in the Nassau County Museum of Art, NY, The IDB Cultural Center and The Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C. Selected to be part of the National Biennial of Visual Arts and the XX edition of the E. León Jimenes Art Contest (Biennial), where he received the Prize for painting, both in the Dominican Republic. He participated in the “Sarmiento Public Art Project, 2007” in public areas of the city of Santo Domingo.
International contemporary art fairs include: VOLTA NY, Scope, Pinta and Arte BA. His work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, CA; Fundación para la Pintura, Canaria, Spain; the Museum of Contemporary Drawing and the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo; The Dominican Congress and in private collections in New York, London, Miami, Spain, Panamá, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo.

June is an exciting month at Angora Gallery this year, with three memorable exhibitions to get the summer off to a great start. The Manifestation of Milieu shows artists taking the familiar and adding a sense of the unusual to it, with each work of art becoming a window into a world similar to ours, but where anything seems possible. In Pulse of Abstraction, a feeling of energy, movement and fulfilling life infuses the works, reaching out to touch the audience and encourage us to respond with courage and conviction. In Kaneko Johkoh's solo exhibition, thoughtful consideration merges with an attractively impulsive method to create Sumi ink paintings of power and potency. The exhibitions open on June 4, 2013 and continue until June 25, 2013, with an opening reception on the evening of Thursday, June 6, 2013. In conjunction with the May release of the beach-bag-size edition of Life’s a Beach, Aperture is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the best selections from Martin Parr’s beach photography.

Parr has been photographing beaches for thirty years, documenting all aspects of them, including close-ups of sunbathers, rambunctious swimmers caught mid-plunge, and the eternal sandy picnic underway. His international career, in fact, could well be traced to the launch of The Last Resort, a 1986 book depicting the seaside resort of New Brighton, near Liverpool.

What may be less known is that this obsession has led Parr to photograph beaches around the world. This compilation, his first on the topic, presents photos of beachgoers on far-flung shores, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Thailand, and, of course, the UK. The exhibition brings to the fore Parr’s engagement with a cherished subject matter—that rare public space in which general absurdities and local quirks seamlessly fuse together.

This selection of photographs shows Parr at his best, startling us with moments of captured absurdity and immersing us in rituals and traditions associated with beach life the world over.

Martin Parr (born in Epsom, England, 1952) is a key figure in the world of photography, recognized as a brilliant satirist of contemporary life. Author of over thirty photography books, including Common Sense, Our True Intent Is All for Your Delight, and Boring Postcards, his photographs have been collected by museums worldwide, including the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and Tate Modern, London. A retrospective of his work continues to tour major museums around the world since opening at the Barbican Art Gallery, London, in 2002. Parr is a member of Magnum Photos.

Asya Geisberg Gallery is pleased to present Carolyn Case & Jens Schubert, a two-person exhibition of paintings and prints. Each artist combines an omnivorous interest in symbolic systems derived from ancient, contemporary, and religious iconography with rigorous technique. Case, American-born, has studied and travelled in multiple cultures, and found inspiration in Indian miniature painting, Andean textiles, Persian palaces, and trans-cultural conceptions of mortality and the afterlife. Schubert, a young German artist, similarly points to the ubiquity and perpetuity of signs and symbols as they reappear across time, and today in music, video games, anime, fashion and other forms of pop culture.

Case‘s paintings, while intimate in scale, present grand universes of limitless space, overlapped by areas of teeming detail, such as tiny dots on stalactite-like drips. Flat silhouettes of ancient urns and vases float through each painting. Schubert’s graphic linocuts of overlapping geometry and repeated images explode with color, pattern, and texture. His series “Realms of Heaven” explores the different meanings and associations of heaven and sky, starting with the premise that in German, the word is the same for both “sky” and “heaven”. Schubert‘s series of unique prints explore the traces of old myths within our current imagination, while disrupting the desire for narrative.

Schubert and Case strategically confound and even erase the specific national or cultural origin of each inspiration in order to create a post-modern quilt of imagery. Each artist travels far to get to a personal place where, as suggested by cultural thinkers such as Robert Campbell or Carl Jung, we can each access a subconsciously embedded understanding of basic archetypes.

Carolyn Case lives and works in Baltimore, MD. Originally from California, Carolyn Case earned her MFA from MICA’s Mount Royal School of Art in Baltimore, MD, and her BFA from California State University in Long Beach, CA. She has shown throughout the Mid-Atlantic area, with solo exhibitions at Loyola University, McLean Projects for the Arts, and The Art Registry in Washington D.C. She has also participated in two-person and group exhibitions at Joyce Goldstein Gallery, John Fonda Gallery, and the Delaware Museum of Art. Residencies include the School 33 Art Center in Baltimore, Vermont Studio Center, and the Kanoria Art Center in Ahmedabad, India. Case's works are featured in the Spring 2013 New American Paintings, and have been reviewed in the Baltimore Sun.

Jens Schubert was born in 1983 in Schwarzenberg, Germany, and lives and works in Leipzig. He studied at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig, and has had solo exhibitions with Mewo Art Gallery, Memmingen, M2A Gallery, Dresden, and Bongout Gallery, Berlin, among others. Group exhibitions include Instituto de Artes Gráficas, Oaxaca, Mexico, the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden, Museum of Visual Arts, Leipzig, Galerie Kleindienst, Leipzig, and Biksady Gallery, Budapest. His work has been exhibited at the Volta Art Fair, NY, and the Preview Art Fair, Berlin, in 2012, and in 2011 he received the Marion Ermer Prize.

Barbara Mathes Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of the art of Fausto Melotti. In recent years, the gallery has introduced American audiences to a number of different sides to this complex artist’s career, from his elegant metal sculptures to the chromatic fireworks of his ceramics. The current exhibition—comprised of rarely seen objects drawn from the artist’s estate—features drawings and mixed media works on plaster, revealing yet another dimension to the artist’s oeuvre.
Born in Rovereto, Italy in 1901, Melotti studied both art and music in his early schooling before majoring in engineering in university. When he dedicated himself to becoming an artist in 1928, he drew on all of these experiences to formulate an expansive, harmonious understanding of the arts. Also pivotal to his development were his conversations with his Lucio Fontana, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship while in art school in Milan. His mature work was influenced by the competing avant-gardes of the early 20th century, wedding the Constructivist’s technical rigor with the Surrealists’ fantastical, biomorphic vocabulary. Underlying this eclecticism was an artistic philosophy based on inclusion and harmony, inspired in large measure by his lifelong love of music and poetry. As he once stated, “The matrimony of the arts is their life. Poetry is only such if sentiment is wedded to music, if painting is wedded to the sentiments of poetry and music, lyrical music to poetry, contrapuntal music to a plastic idea. Pure art is a spinster.”
Melotti reinvented his practice in the years following World War II. After discovering that his Milan studio had been destroyed in the aerial bombardments, he rented a kiln, thus initiating a fifteen-year period in which he only produced ceramics and terracotta sculptures. Working with ceramics introduced an organic spontaneity to his practice, as the precise geometries and refined classicism of his earlier work gave way to a more elemental urgency born out of the new postwar reality. When he resumed working in metal sculpture in the sixties, he continued to explore this aspect of his practice in drawings and plaster reliefs. The works in this exhibition find Melotti experimenting with loose washes of color, clotted rivulets of plaster, and an assertive materiality. In comparison to the studied refinement of the metal sculptures, they possess an intimacy and sense of personal poetry, representing a more private side to the artist’s practice.

Curatorial Statement by A.E. Benenson:
At the birth of modern computing, a paradox: only after Alan Turing theorizes an infinitely large computer do we begin to plausibly imagine how our world could be digitally remade as small as possible. That is, it’s
only after Turing fixed our technological gaze outwards onto infinity that we began our relentless dwindling inwards, towards miniaturized circuits and virtualization. Taking this contradictory movement as both its content and form, the exhibition Vanishing Point presents views of a contemporary digital vastness that is both boundless and barely there.

By understanding computing as an ongoing experiment in the incommensurate, the artists in this exhibition draw the discipline of computing into various unlikely associations: outer-space, the afterlife, Abstract Expressionism, Greek Tragedy. And yet at the same time, there is a move to deconstruct the traditional aesthetic associations with the infinite (e.g. “the sublime”) in terms of a contemporary virtual sprawl that is often pathetically insignificant, banal and quotidian. These analytical impulses are tempered with modes of address that are more lyrical, less direct; formal experiments within the contradictions of a new vastness that is simultaneously too large and too small to be fully apprehended.

Here, “vanishing point” refers not only to the infinitely distant and small destination where everything rushes to converge, but also to a potential moment of disappearance – an event horizon where technology swallows something once and for all…what exactly – irrationality, expressivity, scarcity, suffering? Natural Selection engages the idea of the ‘natural’ from multiple angles: from a purely retinal and aesthetic perspective, from social and cultural points of view and even from a somatic, experiential vantage.

Lee Arnold’s Winter Light seeks to represent natural light as pure abstraction. The images take the form of digital collages, which are derived from scanned photographs (shot on film) that were subsequently scanned, cropped, digitally manipulated and output as inkjet prints. These works date from the winter of 2012-2013.

Rick Caruso creates paintings by culling abstract forms from intersecting exterior and interior spaces—the industrial, the domestic, the landscape, the cartoon—and transforming these fragments into something analogous to a visual narrative.
Christina Kelly’s installation work is part of her ongoing project: A Field Guide to Office Plants. Here she displays actual potted plants (Sansevieria, Pothos, and the Janet Craig Dracaena form part of the selection) and, through drawings, text and photographs, explores these popular office plant’s source and how they landed in our cubicles.
Michael Krondl utilizes very large photographs derived from fragments of the natural world that locate the viewer in an uncomfortable and even dangerous space. He is exhibiting new work that engages ideas of falling and drowning.

To The Friends Who Saved My Life,
…an exhibition prompted by the introduction of Francesca Woodman’s work to Heinz Peter-Knes and Danh Vō. They in turn suggested a parallel to Hervé Guibert, unknown to us at the time. About a year later, we learned that Nightboat Books, the companion enterprise to Callicoon Fine Arts, was newly engaged with Guibert translations, a publication plan that in turn prompted the gallery to introduce Guibert’s photographs to an American audience. Shared images and writings closed a circle that we hadn’t known of before, including our own works, those of Rona Yefman, an Israeli photographer living in New York, Heinz, Danh, and a single Francesca Woodman, as our starting point.

Guibert’s best known book, To the Friend Who Did Not Save My Life, is a memoir of crisis and roller-coaster years of rushing between doctors and lovers. With extraordinary recall and dispassion, that is, with a photographic voice, even towards his own diagnosis and decline, Guibert maps the early years of the AIDS crisis. In those times when human friends became “friend[s] whose company I can bear at the moment,” perhaps it was photography that eased them through the door.

Among the many formal similarities between Woodman and Guibert, it should be noted that both spent time living and photographing in Rome, where Heinz and Danh were recently in residence, and that the images Woodman and Guibert made there are steeped in its light and shadows. Rona Yefman did not know of Guibert, but she was known to us through her extended photo essay on her brother, and through a pair of striking one-minute films. Moyra’s bottles, Jason’s Polaroids and Rona’s sibling study, all keep the images close to home. Danh and Guibert absorb the Villa Medici residence through its physical effects upon its residents, past and present: the erotics of place carry by association, the knowledge of who was there before. So too does Heinz’s discovery of his own face plastered on the red-lit bathroom wall of a bar, and in his portfolio of black and white prints. Seemingly following an order that appeared in the unedited rolls of 35mm film, flared end frames included, Heinz’s box of prints return us back to the place of the photographer sorting the moments of seeing.

Roll Your Own press announces the publication of Part I of The Life and Times of Richard Musto, a modern day epic, written by Joe Lamport and photographed by Michel Delsol. The book chronicles the true-life story of Musto, an 88-year-old man and outsider artist who lives on the streets of Manhattan.

“This story is about a man’s survival on the City’s streets at an age when most of us would already be consigned to living in an assisted living facility,” as Joe Lamport explains. “Richard Musto is an artist - a survival artist - of the first rank.”

In conjunction with the publication, the authors are mounting an exhibit of photographs documenting Richard’s life on New York's sidewalks. Images from the book will be displayed alongside examples of Richard’s own writings and drawings. The exhibit will also feature an installation of one of Musto’s cardboard dwellings.

“We’re very grateful to Chashama for providing this gallery space where we can show Richard’s work and where visitors will be able to directly experience his life on the streets,” says Lamport. “We want to bring this outsider artist inside where his life and work can be more fully appreciated.”

“Richard’s creative energy has been crucial to his survival,” according to Michel Delsol. “We hope to continue that trend by dedicating a third of the proceeds we receive from the sale of books and prints to provide for Richard’s continued well-being.“
