Reeves has enjoyed numerous exhibitions internationally including one person shows at Gian Enzo Sperone in Rome, Max Protetch in New York, Ramis Barquet in New York and Monterrey, Art & Public in Geneva, The Wooster Art Museum in Massachusetts, Joan Prats in Barcelona, Gorney Bravin Lee in New York. By adopting 17th- and 18th- century American folk motifs, Seattle-based Anne Siems’ portraits and still life paintings emit a haunting awkwardness. With rosy cheeks, haunted gaze and flattened features, Siems’ highly stylized figures inhabit a dreamy colonial landscape. As the world itself seems frozen in time, the transparent figures float in the foreground, forever youthful and mysterious. The delicate patterning found in traditional embroidery is the main element used to define their clothing. A thick application of paint, at times intentionally crackled to create the effect of an aged surface, emphasizes folk painting and faux antiquity. Siems' paintings ‘borrow backwards’ with a refreshing whimsy and off kilter grace, participating in the current revival of ‘old, weird America.’ ARTDAILY.ORG March 2011

Siems, who is German-born and now living in the northwestern United States, has drawn inspiration from the Guide on Wildlife in Europe, featuring unforgettable animal portraits. These, along with her youthful cast of human characters, celebrate the joys and mysteries of life. Distinct identities emerge in each portrait with fable-like stories becoming the narrative. Ritual elements from Native American medicine and culture, rabbits, deer, owls and mythological animals, their pelts and feathers, are prominent subjects in Siems’ menagerie. The muse of the artist is both real and imaginary.
 
ARTIST’S STATEMENT: In 2001 it seemed like I never recovered fully from a flu, I constantly felt fatigued and achy. Several years later I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Ever since, I have been on a path to find healing. My work in psychotherapy has helped me to shift my nervous system to a calmer, less exhausting “gear” (in Fibromyalgia the nervous system is in a constant fight or flight pattern). This work has also gotten me more deeply in touch with the earth as a sacred being.
For a while now I have longed for more ritual and ceremony in my life. I was raised with little religion, but connected to Christianity through my time as a child in South America and my upbringing in Germany.
Lately, I have found my yearning for spiritual practice in the Native American traditions of shamanic medicine making. I believe in all of us is the genuine desire to connect first and foremost with that which sustains us. All of our ancestors were originally oriented toward ritual and ceremony that honored and celebrated the earth, the sky and all that exists in between.
I believe we can attain healing for the body, soul and planet by rediscovering our relationship to these roots of worship. Consciously thanking that which sustains us –the air we breathe, the earth that holds us to her and everything that surrounds us- allows for just that. — Anne Siems, 2013

Roll Your Own press announces the publication of Part I of The Life and Times of Richard Musto, a modern day epic, written by Joe Lamport and photographed by Michel Delsol. The book chronicles the true-life story of Musto, an 88-year-old man and outsider artist who lives on the streets of Manhattan.
 
“This story is about a man’s survival on the City’s streets at an age when most of us would already be consigned to living in an assisted living facility,” as Joe Lamport explains. “Richard Musto is an artist - a survival artist - of the first rank.”
 
In conjunction with the publication, the authors are mounting an exhibit of photographs documenting Richard’s life on New York's sidewalks. Images from the book will be displayed alongside examples of Richard’s own writings and drawings. The exhibit will also feature an installation of one of Musto’s cardboard dwellings.
 
“We’re very grateful to Chashama for providing this gallery space where we can show Richard’s work and where visitors will be able to directly experience his life on the streets,” says Lamport. “We want to bring this outsider artist inside where his life and work can be more fully appreciated.”
 
“Richard’s creative energy has been crucial to his survival,” according to Michel Delsol. “We hope to continue that trend by dedicating a third of the proceeds we receive from the sale of books and prints to provide for Richard’s continued well-being.“

This exhibition marks the first survey of drawings by Ken Price, an artist best known for his sculptural work. A selection of 68 works on paper will track Price’s pursuit of drawing over 48 years and will demonstrate a wide range of characters and techniques. This exhibition will be concurrent with the traveling retrospective of Price’s work organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
 
Slow and Steady Wins the Race: Ken Price, Works on Paper, 1962-2010 will travel to Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, from September–November 2013 and the Harwood Museum of Art, Taos, New Mexico from February 22–May 4, 2014.

Simon Preston Gallery is delighted to present On The Passage of a Few, an exhibition of works by Alexandre da Cunha, Terence Gower, Luis Molina-Pantin and Lisa Tan. The exhibition opens on 19 June and runs until 4th August, 2013.
Borrowing its title from Guy Debord‘s 1959 film, On the Passage of a Few Persons Through a Rather Brief Unity of Time, the exhibition explores the relationship between citizen and environment, while it simultaneously critiques and pays homage to decaying modernist ideologies. Each artist dismantles the structure of modernist systems by exploiting and transforming the materiality of cultural and architectural tropes in order to make way for new narratives.
Terence Gower’s installation The Red Wall (El Muro rojo) dominates the gallery space. An enormous red wall frames a black and white restaged photo of Armando Salas Portugal’s famous 1953 image of Casa Barragán. By reducing Luis Barragán‘s exuberant colours to grey tones, the work highlights Barragan’s aesthetical concerns with emotional experience and architecture. Known for playful appropriation of everyday objects such as plungers, mops, fans or bottles, Alexandre da Cunha uses critical wit to topple hierarchical modernist language. With Full Catastrophe (drum XIV), the simple gesture of liberating a rusted industrial cement mixer from its original function raises complex questions of trade and labor. Luis Molina-Pantin is an obsessive chronicler. Whether using photography, books, everyday objects or postcards, Luis creates inventories of our over-looked cultural landscapes. Non-fiction reviews, is an installation consisting of sixteen fictional vintage books, each cover depicting an airplane disaster. Objectifying the book through the lens of the archive, the series becomes a strategy of representing failed ideologies - the imagery of flight, a classic modern aspiration displayed as a dystopian failure. Lisa Tan incorporates personal and collective histories in order to explore her long-standing preoccupation with the indefinable. In this instance, Alter Nordfriedhof casually documents a cemetery in Munich on a spring day. Overgrown vines and flowers obscure the tombstones into abstract shapes. Through the use of repetition and the apparatus of archival structures, an elegant ontological study transforms into a poetic meditation on mortality.

Luis Molina-Pantin (b.1969, Switzerland). Lives and works in Caracas, Venezuela. Recent solo presentations include; Faria-Fabregas Galeria, Caracas; Lisa Sette Gallery, Arizona; Valenzuela Klenner Galería, Bogotá; Arte Contemporáneo, Caracas; Fondazione Villa Bardini, Florence. His work has also been showcased at the 7th Gwangju Biennial, Korea; The Cisneros Foundation, Miami; The 4th MERCOSUR Biennial, Porto Alegre, Brazil; 25th Sao Paulo Biennial, Brazil. He is currently included in ICP Triennial, New York and a solo exhibition will open at Henrique Faria, New York on 20 June 2013.
 
Lisa Tan (1973, New York). Lives and works in New York and Stockholm. She has been included in solo and group exhibitions at institutions and galleries such as Artists Space, New York; Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo CGAC, Santiago de Compostela; Arthouse at the Jones Center, Texas; Galerie Nordenhake, Stockholm; Kadist Art Foundation, Paris; Galería Parra & Romero, Madrid; D’Amelio Terras, New York; LA><ART, Los Angeles; and FRAC Bourgogne (Dijon). She is co-curating an exhibition with Lisa Oppenheim for Art in General that will open this September.

Eleven Rivington is pleased to present a solo exhibition of recent work by French artist Anne-Lise Coste, on view from June 20 – through August 9, 2013 at our 195 Chrystie Street location. The artist has shown extensively in Europe for almost 15 years and this is her first with Eleven Rivington.
 
The exhibition will feature new paintings executed primarily in spray-painted acrylic. In the main gallery, an immersive series of 12 black and white canvases based on details of Picasso’s Guernica breaks down the highly complex and visually dense painting into singular appropriated and abstracted scenes. In the smaller second space of the gallery is a display of a new series of text-based works and abstract paintings. All share a unique balance of severity and airiness, in addition to sharp wit. Impulsiveness is characteristic for her work—often painting over previous attempts with gesso until satisfied. Treating letters as units of words allow her to bypass the strict rules of language and convention. With her decisive use of a spray gun to articulate with pigment, she fuses the vitality of expressionism (direct and intuitive mark-making) with the aloofness of Pop (mechanized paint application). Coste frequently raises existential questions - the social and political content of Picasso's regarded masterpiece is undeniable - articulating them by cropping details, re-articulating or subverting specifics, or executing gestures or texts in the form of direct statements / re-statements that expose every single pore. The tangled whole of her practice is a many-voiced inner monologue, a maze whose paths seem to know only two ways out: either an implosion of meaning via repetition, or an explosion through pure overload.
 
Anne-Lise Coste was born 1973 in Marseille, France and currently lives and works in New York. She studied in Marseille at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and in Zurich at the Hochschule fuer Gestaltung und Kunst. Recent and upcoming shows include Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle, Bonn, Germany; Fundacio Caixa Madrid, Spain; Esslinger Kunstverein, Esslingen, Germany; Museo de Bellas Artes de Santander, Santander, Spain. This exhibition is presented in association with Nogueras Blanchard, Barcelona.

Eleven Rivington is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in New York by American artist Israel Lund, on view from June 20 through August 9, 2013 at the gallery’s 11 Rivington Street location.
 
Israel Lund’s paintings are a record of the static within a system of reproduction. There is a point at which they commenced, but they began with an image of nothing, as Lund initially burned an open rectangle approximately 8.5 x 11 inches into a silkscreen, unevenly forcing black ink through the blank image onto a canvas. By affecting a copy of nothing, Lund imports no other information to the painting’s surface but that which is already inherent to the process of reproduction itself (e.g. the black ink, its semi-mechanical application, the data assumed to be copied), thereby allowing the system to generate the image. As he distorts, enlarges, degrades, and re-inserts these copies further, Lund extrapolates a recursive and deconstructive method of reproduction that continually re-doubles upon itself, imparting a physical and conceptual liquidity to each individual painting, alleviating the burden of originality from any work and the artist himself.
 
The works on view at Eleven Rivington have long since distanced themselves from this beginning, having appeared in an artist book, then haphazardly rearticulated through three-color process paintings (cyan, yellow, and magenta), scanned and digitally distributed on his and others tumblr pages, and presently re-photographed through a PDF generating application on his phone, the images from which provide the basis for this exhibition. The paintings are altered as much by their actual, physical production, as by their dissemination, each step in this process degrading the copies further, purposefully leaving us with no original by which we can ground the work. The paintings only change slightly from iteration to iteration, but they flood the system with copies of themselves, polluting the essential qualities of the work with its innumerable duplications and the mutations that accord such a process.
 
Four of the paintings are hung on the front windows of the gallery, which may best represent the simultaneity of their production, consumption, and dissemination. Facing the paintings from the front, the stretchers and braces cast a shadow through the canvas, the central rectangle not only reflecting, but also emitting light that shines through its surface. With greater contrast between the shades, and a certain bald luminescence to the highlights, the paintings appear to frame dull jpegs of themselves. They are then both image and the thing itself, and, given their relatively inevitable online distribution, the physical paintings occupy an experiential stage with their reproductions, anticipating the future life of the painting through the past life of its various copies, and its present appearance. Lund’s work temporarily flattens these transient moments into one space and context, aware, however, of the slippery identity of paintings.
 
Israel Lund was born in 1980 in New York. He was educated at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers Univeristy, NJ (MFA) as well as Pacific Northwest College of Art, OR (BFA). He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. New York, NY April 18, 2013 — On a single night, three terrorists in a high-security prison die, allegedly by their own hands; a fourth is hospitalized with allegedly self-inflicted stab wounds to the chest. Ever since, the events of the “Death Night” of the members of the Baader-Meinhof group have reverberated through German society and culture. But what might those events mean to artists in another country gripped by fear of radical terrorists, albeit a generation removed and an ocean away? How might today’s artists respond to iconic pieces that addressed the events in their immediate aftermath? Those are the questions that guided Brooklyn artist Birgit Rathsmann as she worked with 19 other artists from the U.S. and Europe to develop October 18, 1977. The exhibition is a meditation on that infamous night when Andreas Baader and three others were found dead or wounded in their prison cells — as well as on the images that earlier artists created in response to the events of that night. Rathsmann “commissioned” new pieces and collaborated to varying degrees with the participants in the exhibition. This created a dialog among artists who share Rathsmann’s interest in the questions raised by the events of October 18, 1977 and those raised by earlier artworks that address those events. In other words, Rathsmann didn’t curate this show; she served as its catalyst. Many of the questions she and the exhibition’s other artists examine have lingered for 36 years: Did the terrorists have a suicide pact? Was it set into motion when they learned that a hijacking intended to win their freedom had failed? If so, how did Andreas Baader and another terrorist manage to get guns into the isolated, high-security cells where they were held in solitary confinement? How did Baader manage to shoot himself in the back of his head? Why were there no fingerprints on either of the guns? How was the sole survivor of that night able to stab herself in the chest four times? Is there evidence to support her allegation that the deaths were summary executions rather than suicides? Those and other questions about that night encapsulate the dramatic relationship between the state and violent non-conformists — a relationship that becomes more relevant with each new act of mass violence. A number of works in October 18, 1977 respond directly to the eponymous cycle of 15 paintings by Gerhard Richter which depict the dead terrorists and the prison where they died. The paintings are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (169.1995), far from the location of their creation and the events that inspired them. Other works in this exhibition directly address specific aspects of the deaths and their cultural setting: the psychological effects of prolonged solitary confinement, the aesthetics of mid-twentieth century German institutional architecture, and the era’s proliferation of ‘zine-like publications that openly expressed sympathy for terrorist organizations. Some works even go so far as to imagine alternative histories. Taken together, the works in the exhibition present a multifaceted examination of that confounding historical moment in the Germany of 1977 and its lingering cultural influence — an examination that’s especially relevant in New York City of 2013.

Krause Gallery presents “Emerging to Established”; a unique perspective on our annual summer Group Show.
Krause Gallery will give new and emerging artists the opportunity to show their works in a gallery setting as well as showing some of the galleries established artists new works.
Each artist will show 2 or 3 pieces of their work. One being what they are known for and one possibly a step in a new direction. This is interesting because for the emerging artists they are just beginning but already testing the waters. For the Established artists its a chance to feel out their collectors in a new direction. The show is split into two parts – June 20th – July 16th and July 20th to September first.

Mike Weiss Gallery is pleased to present a questionable low point in our program: Birth of a Legend, by nomadic artist Cameron Gray. Roberta Smith and Jerry Saltz claim that “Cameron Gray is too big too fail,” and Paddy Johnson of Art Fag City asked for “more cheddar” with her order of Cameron Gray. Gray’s latest exploit serves up a Dionysian smörgåsbord of state-of-the-art digital technology, where kaleidoscopically bright palettes and hypnotic kitsch run rampant. With your senses utterly titillated and suitably doped, you‘ll discover his artistic touch is as light as his work is raucous; speed of play carefully calibrated, execution satirically dead-pan, and content spot-on HOT. Straddling the line between comfort and the disquietingly uncanny, Gray’s gargantuan installations flash, blink, twirl, and pulsate off the walls in utter pandemonium, culling visual and auditory white noise from the vast Internet in something akin to a holy art apocalypse. As Gray descends into the deepest realms of the web world, we can only look on and marvel at the chaos that we have created.
 
Frequently likened to the second coming of Koons and thoroughly rooted within postmodern sensibilities, Gray is an incredibly articulate forager of the irreverent. In I Was Made For Dancin’, All, All, All Night Long, Gray achieves near tantric nirvana, emblazoning a glossy, hollowed Leif Garrett poster with psychedelic patterns and prismatic forms; two all-seeing eyes flicking every which way as he sluggishly sings the work’s eponymous and utterly cheeky song. Acid Zen Garden imbues a glowing cherub figure and assorted fauna with Gray’s unrivaled knack for mischief. Like-wise, in Ice Cream for John Wayne, a duo of melting waffle cone treats take residence upon John Wayne’s dreamy visage. Not content to simply tear the ‘mask’ off such iconic machismo, Cameron spatters many a surrounding wall with fluorescent, glow-in-the-dark paint—effectively taking on Abstract Expressionist bravado as well.
 
A shaman of digital technique and reprographic means, Gray sets forth an alternate universe rife with under-auto black lighting and over-the-top pop, instinctively splaying nonsensical sights and sounds across an ambitious range of mediums: video collages chock-full of outlandish abstractions, including an all-encompassing 12 foot wide work comprised of 27 monitors; an epic 7-foot-tall pin bricolage in which 3,000 photographic images abut embedded 3-D video, spinning disco-lights, and utterly unrelated bric-a-brac; manipulated c-prints of classic American icons; and circular, Archimboldo-like smiley-face sculptures in which fake food is adhered to densely-patterned, wood-mounted table-cloths, with fake plastic ‘turkey dinners’ forming the eyes of one piece, and a glazed faux Jell-O mold its nose. Simultaneously chaotic, organic, orgasmic, and narcotic, Gray delivers the Cadillac of collage, the epitome of hyper-stimulation, and the ultimate state of transcendence – a meaningless yet tantalizing void, where nothing is sacred. Indulge yourself this summer in this orgiastic, optical feast and celebrate with us the 10-year anniversary of Mike Weiss Gallery.
 
Cameron Gray, Birth of a Legend.
 
Born in Geneva in 1980, Cameron Gray lives and works in London, Basel, and Los Angeles. Graduating egregia cum laude from Bruce High Quality Foundation University, Gray also holds no less than six degrees from such prestigious institutions as Yale, Columbia, and UCLA. Prior to his ascension into the upper levels of the art historical pantheon, Gray will have participated in two Venice Biennales, including the one to take place in 2015, and three Whitney Biennials, including those in 2016 and 2018. In 2012, Galerie Eva Presenhuber included his work in the seminal show I Wanna F*ck You But We‘re Just Gonna Cuddle, and one of Gray’s massive pin collages was a show-stopping success in The Gag Reflex is Mysterious at the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2011. Grey‘s work is included in the Ludwig-Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen, Germany; the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Kaohsiung, Taiwan; the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT; and 17 other prominent collections. Cameron Gray is currently represented by Mike Weiss Gallery, David Zwirner, Thaddaeus Ropac, Sprueth Magers, White Cube and Pace Beijing, amongst others.

All you need is data: the DLD 2012 Conference REDUX rerun

Petzel Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by Simon Denny entitled, All you need is data: the DLD 2012 Conference REDUX rerun, from June 20 to July 27, 2013. This is the artist’s second exhibition with the gallery. A catalogue published by Koenig, including an interview with Hans Ulrich Obrist, texts by Karen Archey, digital law expert Michael Littger and an introduction by co-curators Bart van der Heide and Saim Demircan, will accompany the show.
 
All you need is data: the DLD 2012 Conference REDUX rerun focuses on the 2012 edition of Munich’s annual Digital Life Design (DLD) conference dld-conference.com/. The conference is a high caliber platform for the exchange of ideas between digital media, the sciences and culture, which had the theme “All You Need Is … DATA?” in 2012. Denny’s exhibition was first presented at the Kunstverein Munich at the beginning of the year, alongside the 2013 DLD conference.
 
For his exhibition, Denny has created a display structure for 89 canvases that represent a visual summary of events that took place at DLD12, harvesting insights from the many speakers such as Jack Dorsey (Twitter), Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia), Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook), Chris “Moot” Poole (4chan) and David Karp (tumblr), among others. The viewer is lead through the exhibition following a railing system that displays individual canvas “screens” that feature photos, pull-quotes and reconfigured stage and graphic designs from the conference. This content is flattened and depicted using iOS “skeuomorphic” style with app-like components. Only print media is used to illustrate the entire high-tech conference chronologically from beginning to end, forming what critic Kevin McGarry has described as “a structuralist memento mori”.
Simon Denny explores the materialization and commodification of “future visions and experiences,” and the lifespan of information in the context of fast paced, tech-driven commerce. The exhibition is a revealing format for how predetermined futures are promoted from the perspective of the digital economy. As such, the ‘REDUX’ in the title suggests a revisit of these future forecasts and is also indicative of the ‘Director’s Cut’ or a re-edit as a means of artistic appropriation.
Simon Denny was born in New Zealand in 1982 and received his degree at the Städelschule, Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt. He has had numerous solo exhibitions, with shows at the Aspen Art Museum and Kunstverein Munich in the past year. He will be included in this year’s Venice Biennial as well as have an exhibition at MuMOK, Vienna this summer as a winner of the Art Basel Statements Baloise Preis in 2012. He is also a nominee for this year’s German Nationalgalerie Preis at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. Simon Denny lives and works in Berlin.

RICCO/MARESCA GALLERY is pleased to present Rebecca Norris Webb: My Dakota. This exhibition brings together works from Webb’s acclaimed book recounting the sudden loss of her brother through intimate landscape portraits of her home state of South Dakota. My Dakota serves as a lyrical elegy, depicting the hypnagogic process of grieving and visually chronicling the fragility of life and the inexplicable changes that occur while mourning.
 
Rebecca Norris-Webb moved to South Dakota at the age of 15. The artist originally found expression as a poet, before exploring photography after college. For Webb, language could not fully capture the totality of the world around her, nor satisfy her innate curiosity for visual exploration. The artist’s latest book, My Dakota, blends poetry with photographs of her home state as a multi-layered portrait that marries aesthetic representation with lyrical record. The heart of the book lies in the enigmatic photographs where the artist is seemingly searching for significance behind continuation and meaning beyond an emotional chasm. Reflections and windows play a significant role in the series as a way of capturing memory within the present while exuding a sense of abandonment and disconnect from life’s fleeting moments. Rooted in sentient exploration, each work is open to interpretation – giving viewers an outlet to draw their personal recollections and emotive conclusions.
 
My Dakota transcends artistic privy and instead maintains a core universal empathy. The artist states, “Looking back at My Dakota, I now realize that I was photographing this dark time in my life in order to try to absorb it, to crystallize it, and, ultimately, to let go of it. Not only did my first grief change me, but making My Dakota changed me as well, both as a human being and as an artist.”
 
My Dakota was first shown in 2012 at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, South Dakota, and will be exhibited at the North Dakota Museum of Art in Grand Forks, North Dakota from June 5 - August 6, 2013. SVEN-OLE FRAHM A Hole in the Wall is Nothing to Worry About June 20 – August 16, 2013
 
Galerie Richard New York is pleased to present Sven-Ole FRAHM’s first exhibition in the USA from June 20th to August 16th, 2013. Galerie Richard Paris has been representing the German artist since 2007. By cutting painted canvases and sewing them together, Frahm develops a new role for the canvas as a material to replace the pictorial paint gesture. His works are distinctive by the dynamic compositions that play with the unexpected.
 
The title “A Hole in the Wall is Nothing to Worry About” highlights the artist’s practice of notable experimentation and risk-taking. Sven-Ole Frahm instinctively employs various methods of intervention upon his paintings. Often, he will cut them into geometric sections and sew the pieces together. We are faced with a destruction-creation process advocated by the economist Joseph Schumpeter and with a deconstructive process expresses by the philosopher Jacques Derrida. In the newly exhibited works, he deliberately and meticulously cut holes, rectangles, or u-shapes to produce voids and flaps that hang forward. He sews added strips of canvases in such a way to reveal both sides. The deconstruction-construction process is absolutely under the artist control.
 
Frahm develops a new role for the canvas as a means of reinventing standard mark making. Curved gestural painted lines are replaced by collaged canvas strips. Previously, he had cut and sewn painted canvases with formal shapes. In most of his new works, every color, every shape, is no more a painted gesture but is expressed by a new way to use the canvas as a creative medium. At the same time the canvas is not separated from the stretcher. At the opposite of the Support –Surface movement, he maintains the canvas’ integrity.
 
In several paintings the artist shows the natural colored texture of the linen. The line of repeated needle marks and strands of thread add a sense of determination for attachment and render the texture and physical presence of the work more salient and profound. The materiality of paint on pure linen, the exposed anatomy of sewn canvases, as well as the suspended flaps and convex pyramidal volumes all add to the sensual physical experience. Although Constructivist compositions are his trademark, Frahm’s new work tends to a Minimalist aesthetic.
 
The sewing process is not a provocative or frivolous act. Instead it is technique that allowed the artist to fuse a Constructivist composition with a fluid organic one, thus creating a visual represention of an oxymoron. Frahm directs our attention to the subtle artistic details, such as the canvas’ brightly painted reverse side visible from the holes and reflected upon the wall. Frahm is a master of multilayered compositions as a systematic extension of the pictorial space. He contends with these challenges with a sense of joy and humor. Sven-Ole Frahm is right with the title. As long as you know how to compose a painting and arrange colors together in space, a hole is nothing to worry about.
 
Sven-Ole Frahm (1972) lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He graduated from the Art Academy in Dusseldorf in 2001. Frahm has won the prestigious German prize for painting, the ‘Bergischer Kunstpreis’, at Soligen Art Museum in 2006. He took part in the exhibition Compilation III at the Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf in 2007. His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Europe including Düsseldorf, Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris.

OPTIC NERVE: The Prints and Multiples of Sean Mellyn (1993-2013)

UNDERLINE Gallery is pleased to announce a major retrospective of the prints and multiples of Sean Mellyn. From a 1993 drypoint, Boy In The Bubble, to two new digital prints created to celebrate the exhibition – Tour Group and The House What Eye Built – the artist’s innovative utilization of a broad range of printmaking techniques will be on view. Commenting on the various modes of editioning, Mellyn writes:
 
“There seems to be a pecking order with perfection in print-making - Silkscreen being the most accident-prone and the now almost perfect digital techniques are flawless representations. I've been working on how to make accidents before the image is scanned, or to try and do something that will corrupt the file.”
 
Mellyn has worked with such distinguished master printers as Jean-Yves Noblet, Jennifer Melby, Andre Ribuoli. Additionally, he was invited to create several editions at New Mexico’s Tamarind Institute, where he worked in collaboration with master lithographer Bill Lagattuta. One of the works he produced there, Boy With Mask, is included in a traveling exhibition and book celebrating Tamarind’s fiftieth anniversary. Among the significant print collections that have acquired prints by Sean Mellyn are New York’s Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The New York Public Library and The Brooklyn Museum of Art.
 
While the current show encapsulates many of Mellyn’s major themes, his on-going concern with issues of vision – seeing and being seen; surveillance and paranoia; and art historical issues such as the cataracts in Monet’s eyes – emerges very clearly.
 
Mellyn notes: “I really started using eyes after 9/11 as it was clear that we would soon become a people watched. I always thought it’s so ironic that reality tv shows would be such a big deal; that it’s less Warholian 15 minutes of fame, and more scrutiny in government - judgement- busted kind of way.”
 
In addition to the print editions on view, the show will feature the highly-collected three dimensional multiples Mellyn has created. These include t-shirts, handkerchiefs, Paper Monet plates and a number of small sculptural objects. Some of these works were originally done as to benefit such institutions as The New Musuem.
 
Optic Nerve: The Prints and Multiples of Sean Mellyn (1993-2013) has been curated by Michael Steinberg, who, as a publisher, gallerist and collector has had a long involvement with Sean Mellyn’s work.

Trestle is pleased to present Will Hutnick’s abstract paintings and Jeanne Wilkinson’s photographs and the video installation.
 
Hutnick’s energetic abstract paintings utilize tape, spray paint, ink, acrylic and oil as he simultaneously plays with large, sweeping gestures and minute details. His process is spontaneous, expressive and performative. Often his paintings are finished in one sitting. As he states, the process is “an event, a challenge, an experience.” Trestle explores the dialogue between the surprises that arise from his process and the permanence of the tangible results in his work.
 
Jeanne Wilkinson is formerly an abstract painter who now incorporates her paintings and drawings in animated short films. Her most recent video installation, The Sun and the Horn, celebrates the 2013 Summer Solstice—which coincides with the date of the exhibition’s opening reception. With multiple projectors and translucent scrims, Wilkinson’s figurative, abstract, and kaleidoscopic imagery envelops viewers as they interact with the installation. Adding to the installation’s collaborative and interactive qualities, the audience is invited to wear headdresses made by Wilkinson as they walk between the scrims.
 
Trestle is also presenting photographs from Wilkinson’s series entitled ‘Painted People,’ in which Wilkinson depicts the vision quests and adventures of figurines who travel the earth and beyond.

MINUS SPACE is delighted to present the exhibition Julio Grinblatt: Cielito Lindo. This is the Argentine-born, Brooklyn-based artist’s first solo exhibition in New York and it will feature a suite of unique, large-scale C-print photographs depicting the clear blue sky.
 
An ongoing project, Grinblatt’s Cielito Lindo series stresses how aesthetic notions are generated in relation to the photographic apparatus, in particular the photographic printing process. To create this body of essentially monochromatic photographs, Grinblatt articulated the following four-step premise:
 
1. I took a photograph of a clear sky.
2. I sent the negative to a professional color lab.
3. I asked the printer to print a beautiful sky.
4. Repeat from 2.
 
Julio Grinblatt (b. 1960 in Buenos Aires, Argentina; lives Brooklyn, NY) has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally for the past two decades, including in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Belgium, Finland, Belgium, Italy, and the United States.
 
In 2001, Grinblatt mounted the solo exhibition Uses of Photography at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires (MAMBA) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has participated in group exhibitions at museums, such as MoMA PS1, El Museo del Barrio (both New York); Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia, PA); Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art (Gainsville, FL); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain); Museum of Fine Arts (Brussels, Belgium); Amos Anderson Art Museum (Helsinki, Finland); and Museo de Arte Zapopan (Guadalajara, Mexico), among others.
 
Grinblatt’s work is represented in collections worldwide, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (Houston, TX); Portland Art Museum (Portland, OR); Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art (Gainesville, FL); Light Work Permanent Collection (Syracuse, NY); Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires (both Buenos Aires, Argentina), and Museum of Modern Art (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
 
In 2012, Grinblatt co-curated the survey exhibition Notations: The John Cage Effect Today at Hunter College Times Square Gallery together with Joachim Pissarro, Bibi Calderaro, and Michelle Yun. The exhibition was discussed in-depth by writer Thomas Crow in Artforum’s Best of 2012 issue. Grinblatt is Adjunct Assistant Professor at Hunter College in New York, and he holds an MFA from Hunter College and BS from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.

When we asked Moira Williams to explain her “hat” in the show she told us that it was a hat made from bleached newspapers. Newspapers from Bogota Columbia, newspapers that Williams had, while working on her bee-keeping apprenticeship in Columbia, either slept on by night or worn stuffed into her shoes by day. Williams’ specific hope in this was that the words of the newspapers would enter her dreams and she would thus learn Spanish. So, we could try and understand this schematically as, the bees absorb the pollen and make honey while Williams’ body absorbs, in some imprecise way –though perhaps it is a little like the way bees gather pollen– words. Pollen thus becomes honey, while words become knowledge. Words burrow their way –from your dreams, from your feet– into your brain and this is how you come to know something. So in this theory knowledge can be dreamed into a being through bodily contact?
 
It should be noted that this is better deal than Freud. For Freud, as we all know, the dream was merely a wish fulfillment. The dream satisfied some social, sexual or bodily wish, but only mentally; in the dream. All you woke up with was the wish plus the dream. In Freud the dream is a consolation prize. With Williams you learn Spanish.
 
Freud is where much of this sorry tale begins. There we were in the studio one day trying to conjure Freud back to life from silicone rubber and cardboard, a few magical incantations were to be added later. We began, naturally enough, with his hat. That’s when we realized that the hat we were making looked much like the ones our fathers wore back in the late 50’s early 60’s. It also looked like the one we remembered Dick Tracey wearing in Warhol’s painting and the one Belmondo wears as tribute to Bogart in Breathless. In short it (they really) were all over the place. The shoes were next. we wanted to recreate the ones Ray Johnson had made and then mailed to Bert Brecht. After we had made a maquette we consulted an image of the real thing in an old Johnson catalogue: he had made them for John Cage.
 
We decided other artists might be more reliable. A show of other artists making hats and shoes; Freud could wait., being dead a little longer wouldn’t hurt. Richard Hulsenbeck, Sophie Tauber, Joseph Beuys, Hugo Ball all wore great hats. And to come full circle Max Ernst made his 1920 “The hat makes the man” collage, allegedly with a nod to Freud.
