    THE HENRY E. HUNTINGTON LIBRARY AND ART GALLERY is a privately endowed institution, established by the man whose name it bears, and now administered by a self-perpetuating board of five trustees. It is a unique establishment, consisting of three closely related but essentially independent parts.

    The best-known of these parts, at least to the world of scholarship, is the library, a working research institute devoted to the study of Anglo-American civilization.
