Curated by Sara Arrhenius and Martin Engler

For more than a decade, Milan-based artist Adrian Paci has been exploring the themes of migration and displacement from a personal—and at times painful—perspective. Working from his experience as an Albanian émigré in Italy, Paci has created a body of work in which nostalgia and longing have given new forms to forgotten traditions, folkloric myths, and popular rituals. His most recent films and videos are testaments to the traumas of globalization, but they also display an archaic beauty, evoking Pasolini’s religious atmospheres and cult of simplicity. This solo show of some twenty works from 1997 to 2007 at the Kunstverein Hannover—produced in collaboration with the Center for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv, and the Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm—offers the largest survey yet of Paci’s output, tracing the coordinates for a journey across troubled geographies and unwritten histories.
