Aesthetic concerns needn’t be at odds with kitsch. These days, nobody proves this with more verve than the duo Peter Fischli and David Weiss, whose current show “Fotografias” is on view at Eva Presenhuber. More than a hundred postcard-size dark, almost black pictures form a long, elegant line on the white walls. A closer look is required. And here one sees that the tightrope walk these two artists perform between high and low culture, between the everyday and high art, seriousness and foolishness, has once again been negotiated in an enchanting way. “Fotografias” is a collection of images of fairgrounds, roller coasters and amusement parks, collected and expanded upon, like other bodies of work by this duo, on their travels over the years. Ghost ships, wild boars, doe-eyed girls and clowns belong to this cosmos as much as romantic sunsets and mystical mountain landscapes. Fischli/Weiss have photographed the outrageously garish fantasy scenes painted on shooting galleries, haunted-house fairground attractions, and motorcycle fuel tanks, in an markedly underexposed, deliberately amateurish format. This artistic alienation unifies the paintings and renders them, for all intents and purposes, anonymous, the darkening bringing a sense of mystery to their banal content. The perception of kitsch vanishes, leaving behind a feeling of enigmatic fascination.
