Curated by Rodrigo Alonso

This rich, international survey of Conceptual art brings together more than one hundred works made between 1965 and 1975. Latin American strains represented by Argentine Roberto Jacoby, Chilean Juan Downey, and Colombian Bernardo Salcedo, among others, may be privileged, but nearly thirty of their contemporaries based in the US and Europe (including Bas Jan Ader, John Baldessari, and Dan Graham) are featured as well. Here Conceptual art is shown to be not just a game of linguistic tautologies but a movement capable of assuming an array of multifarious forms other than stable objects—whether via bodies, cities, or the public. Aided by a substantial catalogue of corresponding writings and key critical texts (including many published in Spanish for the first time), “Systems” will no doubt add color to work that has previously been viewed largely in black and white.
