$1.2 MILLION OPPENHEIM PROJECT; BUNGA WINS CASTELLóN PRIZE

ARTISTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Denver’s Percent for Art program has awarded its largest public commission since it began almost twenty years ago, a $1.2 million project by artist Dennis Oppenheim to provide an overall vision for the Denver Justice Center complex, reports Mary Voelz Chandler for the Rocky Mountain News. Oppenheim also will create a piece to tie together the various parts of the center. “We selected him as an artist, and not particularly for the proposals he brought in,” said Kendall Peterson, public art administrator for the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs.

In other news, The Castellón County Council of Spain has announced that New York–based Portuguese artist Carlos Bunga has won the third Castellón Painting Prize. Bunga was chosen for the €60,000 ($78,500) prize out of 941entries from fifty-five countries.
