2015 Driskell Prize Winner Announced

The High Museum of Art announced that University of New Mexico professor Kirsten Pai Buick is the winner of this year’s David C. Driskell Prize, reports Creative Loafing Atlanta’s Gavin Godfrey.

Since 2005, the Driskell Prize—named after the prominent African-American artist and scholar—has recognized work that’s impacted the field of African-American art and history. Buick will get a $25,000 cash award.

According to Michael E. Shapiro, the High Museum’s director, Buick was chosen for “her groundbreaking research on a broad range of historical and contemporary subjects as well as her commitment as a professor.”

Buick’s prolific writing includes the book Child of the Fire: Mary Edmonia Lewis and the Problem of Art History’s Black and Indian Subject (2010), put out by Duke University Press. Her next book, In Authenticity: Kara Walker and the Eidetics of Racism, is currently in progress.
