İnci Eviner to Represent Turkey at Fifty-Eighth Venice Biennale

The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) announced today that İnci Eviner will represent Turkey at the Fifty-Eighth Venice Biennale, which will run from May 11 to November 24, 2019. She will present a new installation, curated by Zeynep Öz.

Born in Turkey and raised in Istanbul, Eviner is known for producing works that range from paintings to videos and performances. Her practice often uses drawing as a starting point and addresses the workings of power and the politics of representation, especially with regards to the female body. She has participated in a number of major exhibitions, including the 2017 Sharjah Biennial, the 2016 Aichi Triennale, the 2013 and 2005 Istanbul Biennials, and the 2013 Thessaloniki Biennial, among others.

Öz, an Istanbul-based curator, organized Sharjah Biennial 13’s off-site project, BAHAR, in Istanbul in 2017. Among her other curatorial projects are “Greatest Common Factor” at SALT, Istanbul (2016); “Produce II: Anybody Could Be a Sculptor One Day” for SPOT Production Fund, Istanbul (2014); and “Selling Snails in the Muslim Neighborhood” at the Westfälischer Kunstverein in Münster, Germany (2013).

The pavilion’s advisory board includes Serhan Ada from the department of arts and cultural management at Bilgi University; Özalp Birol, the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation culture and art enterprises general manager; Paolo Colombo, a curator and art advisor at the Istanbul Modern Museum; and Zeynep İnankur, a professor at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and curator at Arter Başak Doğa Temür.
