Ai Weiwei Signs Book Deal for a Memoir

A division of Penguin Random House, Crown Publishing Group, has given Chinese artist Ai Weiwei a book deal to write a memoir, according to Jori Finkel in the New York Times. As Crown describes it, the book will be “an extraordinary cultural history of China over the past one hundred years, told through the prism of both his own life story and that of his father, Ai Qing.” The book will come out in the United States in spring of 2017, with releases also timed in the UK and Canada.

“I write about my father, his generation, and my own experience, our struggle for individual freedom and self-expression in this old society,” said Ai. Ever a dissident, the artist even framed the book as an act of resistance: “The history of totalitarianism is one characterized by the state’s continuous attempts to destroy individual memories.”
