Ai Weiwei has announced that he is currently recording a heavy metal rock album, reports Allan Kozinn of the New York Times. The artist’s inspiration came from his eighty-one-day stay in a Chinese prison in 2011, where he realized he only knew Chinese revolutionary songs after being asked by his guards to sing. “After I came out, I realized I had never really listened to music or sung,” Ai said. The album, titled Shen Qu or “Divine Comedy,” after Dante, will be produced in collaboration with Chinese rock musician Zuoxiao Zuzhou and will include songs about Chen Guangcheng, the blind civil-rights lawyer who was also imprisoned, and a track about the Chinese government’s online censorship. Ai plans on creating his own cover art and music video for the project.
