Andrea Modica is this year’s recipient of Akron Art Museum’s Knight Purchase Award for Photographic Media, reports The Review. A professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Modica has received a Fulbright Grant and a Guggenheim Fellowship for her work. The award will help the museum acquire Modica’s photographs created in Italy, which depict “women and girls, youth friendships, still life and—more recently—a horse hospital,” according to The Review.
An endowment gift from the Knight Foundation in 1990 established the award, which has previously recognized artists including Harry Callahan, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Cindy Sherman, Yinka Shonibare, and Mary Ellen Mark.
