ALBERT EVANS (1968–2015)

A former principal dancer for the New York City Ballet, Albert Evans, has passed away. After winning a full scholarship to the School of American Ballet in 1986, he became part of New York City Ballet’s corps de ballet in 1988. Evans then was promoted to soloist in 1991 and to principal in 1995, following star turns in pieces like Eliot Feld’s “The Unanswered Question” at the American Music Festival.

Evans staged a farewell performance in 2010, dancing “The Four Temperaments,” Balanchine’s 1946 masterpiece, according to Claudia La Rocco in the New York Times_. La Rocco wrote: “The afternoon belonged to Albert Evans, and he soaked in every inch of it. Even after the curtain came down for the last time, and the crowd filed out, the backstage cheers continued. Another Sunday, another retirement: nothing routine about it.”
