Anna K.E. to Represent Georgia at 2019 Venice Biennale

The Düsseldorf and New York–based artist Anna K.E. will represent Georgia at the 2019 Venice Biennale. Commissioned by Georgian gallery Project ArtBeat, the pavilion will be curated by Margot Norton, a curator at the New Museum in New York. K.E.’s Venice presentation, “REARMIRRORVIEW, Simulation is Simulation, is Simulation, is Simulation…,” will go on view on May 11, 2019.

Born in 1986 in Tbilisi, Georgia, K.E. trained as a ballerina before completing her studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2010. Performance and stage sets are often deployed in the artist’s work, which integrates video, painting, 3-D rendering, sculpture, and architectural models in order to explore the relationship between objects, movement, and the legacies of modernism.

K.E.’s recent exhibitions include “Profound Approach and Easy Outcome,” (2017) at the Queens Museum of Art, New York; “Teen Factory” (2015) at Simone Subal, New York; “two whores in the same dress” (2013) at Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin; and “I suppose my doctor is dead” (2013) at Interstate Projects, New York.

The Georgian Pavilion is sponsored by Stern Auto GmbH, Autorisierter Mercedes-Benz Verkauf und Service; Werk5 | New Craft; Goethe-Institut Georgien; TBC Bank; EY; Stamba Hotel Tbilisi; Philara Collection; Carbo Kohlensaeure GmbH & Co. KG.; Dr. Ulrich and Nathan Köstlin; Irakli Kiguradze; Mikheil Chkhartishvili; Ignacio J. Lopez Beguiristain and Laura Guerra; Deborah Goodman Davis and Gerald Davis; and Simone Subal Gallery.
