Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira has been named the winner of the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the thirteenth international architecture exhibition at the Venice Biennale. The decision was made by the biennale board, chaired by Paolo Baratta. Vieira is known for buildings ranging from the Boa Nova Tea House to the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art. He has been the recipient of other awards, including the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture and the Praemium Imperiale. Said the biennale jury of Vieira: “Secured by his isolated location, he exudes worldly wisdom. Experimenting with forms of extreme geometry he manages to produce buildings of great rigor. Developing an architectural language that is uniquely his, he seems to speak to all of us.”
