Arco to Expand with New Fair in Lisbon

Arco Madrid is expanding, according to the Art Newspaper’s José da Silva. The Institución Ferial de Madrid, which runs the fair, has chosen Lisbon, and specifically an eighteenth-century factory building (the Fábrica Nacional da Cordoaria) in the Belem district, as the location of the fair’s first international venture. The satellite fair will take place three months after Arco Madrid, and will feature forty to fifty galleries showing in smaller booths than Arco.

As da Silva points out, the “center-right Portuguese government was ousted by a left-wing anti-austerity coalition” earlier this week, sending the nation’s stock-market plunging. Still, the fair’s administrators brought up “the progressive recovery of the Portuguese economy” as a cause of expansion into Lisbon.
