This morning, ARCO launched its thirty-fifth edition in Madrid with a total of 221 galleries from twenty-seven countries. According to fair representatives, 71 percent of the fair’s exhibitors this year are from foreign countries, with 26 percent of them hailing from Latin America, a fact that, in the words of fair organizers, underscores ARCO’s role as “a meeting-point and space for exchange between Europe and Latin America.” Also included in the mix was a solo-projects section that featured all Latin American artists.
Meanwhile, on behalf of its thirty-fifth anniversary, the fair unveiled a new section titled “Imagining Other Futures,” which includes a curated group of galleries that have each played significant roles throughout the fair’s history but have never exhibited concomitantly with one another.
Asked about “Imagining Other Futures,” ARCO director Carlos Urroz told artforum.com, “We’ve selected thirty-five galleries that are important to us. Aaron Moulton, Catalina Lozano, and María de Corral are the curators . . . . The galleries have never been together at ARCO ever, so it’s a super special moment of this year.”
