The Armory Show has announced that this year’s edition will include two new prizes: The Pommery Prize, a $20,000 award that will recognize an exceptional presentation within the Platform section of the fair, and the $10,000 Étant donnés Prize, which will honor one living artist at the show who is French or is based in France.
The Pommery Prize, which is backed by Pommery Champagne and pays tribute to French businesswoman Madame Pommery and her longtime support for the arts, will be shared between the artist and the presenting gallery. In addition to the monetary reward, the winning artist will have an opportunity to create a new work of art for an exhibition at Pommery Champagne’s venue in Reims, France. For its inaugural year, the jury for the 2019 Pommery Prize will include Nathalie Vranken, owner of Champagne Pommery; Sandra Hegedüs, collector and founder of SAM Art Projects; and Marie Griffay, director of FRAC Champagne-Ardenne.
Established by Étant donnés Contemporary Art, a program of the FACE Foundation that was developed with the cultural services of the French Embassy in the United States, the Étant donnés Prize is sponsored by the Étant donnés Fund, which aims to strengthen the ties between France and the US in the field of contemporary art. By helping to support the development of the winning artist’s practice and professional network, the Etant donnés Prize seeks to enhance the visibility of French artists.
The Armory Show also announced the continued support of sponsor Athena Art Finance. For the third consecutive year, Athena will present the annual Presents Booth Prize, a $10,000 prize that recognizes an outstanding and innovative display within the Presents section of the fair. “We take great pride in our continuing sponsorship of the Presents Booth Prize, which acknowledges new and exceptional galleries and helps to foster future talent,” said board chair James G. Niven. “We look forward to adding another emerging gallery to this esteemed set of alumni.”
Recipients of the prizes will be announced on Thursday, March 7, 2019.
