Art Spiegelman Named Member of American Academy of Arts and Letters

Cartoonist Art Spiegelman, as well as writers Sherman Alexie, Roger Angell, Dave Eggers, and Sharon Olds, are the five newly elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the academy announced yesterday. Pianist Robert Levin is also being inducted as an honorary member.

Author of Maus (which told the story of his father’s imprisonment in concentration camps), Spiegelman was coeditor of the comics magazines Arcade and Raw, and worked as contributing artist for the New Yorker for over a decade starting in 1992. He was named a Guggenheim fellow in 1990 and received a special Pulitzer Prize in 1992.

In Artforum’s summer issue last year, Spiegelman curated a selection of comics which can be found here.
