Anny Shaw of the Art Newspaper reports that the ArtBahrain fair, which opened its first edition in 2015, has changed its name to Art Bahrain Across Borders (Art BAB), and is scheduled to open on March 22, 2017 and run until March 26. It will open just days after Art Dubai, which starts on March 15, 2017 and goes through March 18.
David Hawkins, Art BAB’s new head of outreach and VIP relations, says “Art fairs in the region need to appeal to the up-and-coming generation. Our focus is on artists and grass roots authenticity to develop the market from the bottom up.” Booths for Art BAB will cost twenty percent less than those for Art Dubai, and the fair is even accepting applications from individual artists.
Art BAB will have a talks and education program, an area dedicated to thirty-five international galleries, and two pavilions: one for Bahraini artists, thirty of which will be chosen by an international jury, and another for artists from around the world. The Bahrain-based galleries who took part in the 2015 fair—Hend Gallery, Al Riwaq Art Space, Amina Gallery, Art Divano, and Busaad Art Gallery—are expected to return for 2017.
