Artist Pyotr Pavlensky Transferred from Russian Prison to Psychiatric Hospital

Artist Pyotr Pavlensky has been transferred from prison to a psychiatric hospital to undergo evaluation, reports Tvrain. The announcement yesterday was made by his wife Oksana Shalygina on his Facebook page, saying that the relatives of his cellmate alerted her to his transfer. Pavlensky will have his next session with visitors February 1. The New York Times reports that the hospital is “notorious for giving insanity diagnoses to political dissidents in the Soviet period.”

The artist was accused of “hooliganism” after setting fire to the Lubyanka Building in Moscow, the headquarters of the Russian Federal Security Service, as previously reported here. Pavlensky also famously nailed his scrotum to Moscow’s Red Square, in a political endurance performance piece.
