Artists Call for Boycott of 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro

Monopol reports that the artists in “Projeto Brasil,” a fourteen-day festival in Hamburg that highlights contemporary art in Brazil, are calling for a boycott of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro due to the country’s recent governmental upheaval. Contributing artist Daniel Lee said “In Brazil a political coup has just occured. We have to create awareness. We believe that democratic conditions are the prerequisite for the Olympics.” Choreographer Lia Rodrigues plans on reading a manifesto after the performance of her piece, “For the Sky not to Fall,” the opening work for “Projeto Brasil.”

Five German arts venues support putting on “Projeto Brasil.” Among them are the Kampnagel in Hamburg; the Hellerau–Europäisches Zentrum der Künste in Dresden; and the Hau Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin.

This year’s festival, focusing on contemporary performance, will take into account Brazil’s current political situation with projects related to autonomy, resistance, and favela—or shantytown—culture.
