ArtPrize Appoints Kevin Buist as Artistic Director

ArtPrize, the nonprofit organization based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that awards more than $500,000 in prizes to artists from across the globe each year, announced that Kevin Buist has been named artistic director. Buist has worked with the organization since its inception in 2009. His most recent role at ArtPrize was director of exhibitions.

“I’m thrilled for Kevin to take on this elevated role with ArtPrize as he’ll help shape how the public interacts with contemporary art,” said executive director Jori Bennett. “His unique and intimate knowledge of the organization and how it collaborates within the art world both locally and internationally makes him well suited for this new position.”

As director of exhibitions, Buist oversaw more than 1,400 artist projects, which were presented in more than 170 venue locations each fall. He also helped the organization’s award structure evolve into the format in which it exists today.

Commenting on his promotion, Buist said: “I want to create deep and meaningful collaborations with artists and curators and see them become not only participants in the event, but long-term partners with the organization. We’re using our financial resources and vision, our connections and our communications, to enable projects at ArtPrize that wouldn’t be possible anywhere else.”

The tenth award cycle will take place in downtown Grand Rapids from September 19 to October 7.
