ARTWORK BY DANIEL BUREN BADLY DAMAGED IN KNIFE ATTACK AT CENTRE POMPIDOU
A man who visited the Centre Pompidou in Paris on Thursday, September 12, was arrested after he attacked a painting by the French modernist Daniel Buren with a knife, AFP reports. Peinture (Manifestation 3), 1967, was badly damaged and has since been removed from view so that conservation professionals can assess whether it can be restored.
The police were able to use museum security footage to track down the suspect, who did not reveal a motive for his actions. A representative of the Centre Pompidou said it believed the man is being held in a psychiatric unit. The incident occurred just a week after a work by the street artist Banksy was stolen from the exterior of the building—the image of a rat holding an X-Acto knife was created on the back of a sign for museum parking. According to France24, the stenciled work appeared in June 2018.
