Bart Rutten will join the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam this December as curator of the visual-arts collection. Rutten specializes in video art, and his previous employers have included the Stedelijk Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch and the Netherlands Media Art Institute Montevideo/Time Based Arts, Amsterdam. With a team of curators, Rutten will be responsible for the management of the Stedelijk’s painting and sculpture collections, as well as the audiovisual component, including film and video works. He will also do research on these archives, organize presentations, and work on the displays in the museum’s new building. The shows Rutten has previously organized at the Stedelijk include “Nederclips,” the joint exhibition featuring Maria Roosen and Margriet Smulders, and solo shows by Anne Wenzel, Jeroen Kooijmans, and various local artists from ‘s-Hertogenbosch. He is currently working on “A Never Ending Start,” due to open on November 15 and featuring work by local artists of three different generations: J. C. J. Vanderheyden, Marjan Teeuwen, and Matthijs Bosman. In addition, Rutten is currently a guest lecturer at a range of educational institutions including the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, the Design Academy in Eindhoven, and the University of Utrecht.
