Bartomeu Marí Named Director of the Lima Museum of Art

Bartomeu Marí has been appointed the Lima Museum of Art’s next director. Prior to joining the institution, he served as director of South Korea’s National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art from 2015 to 2018 and as head of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona from 2008 to 2015. He stepped down from the Catalan institution following his controversial firing of two of its curators.

Over the course of his career, Marí has also helmed the Witte de With Art Center in Rotterdam, the International Committee for Museums and Modern Art, and the International Center for Contemporary Culture in Donostia-San Sebastián, and was curator of the 2002 edition of the Taipei Biennial and the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2005.

“This opportunity represents a fabulous challenge and the possibility of contributing my skills to a leading institution in the Americas,” Marí said in a statement. “The breadth and richness of the collections of MALI, its team, and its potential will allow us to produce unique discourses and narrations about history to understand the present and imagine the future, from Peruvian art, to the whole world.”
