BERLIN BIENNIAL ANNOUNCES VENUES; EUROPEAN KUNSTHALLE ANNOUNCES NEW TEAM

MUSEUM NEWS

The 5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art, curated by Adam Szymczyk and Elena Filipovic and opening April 5, will comprise two parts, day and night. During the day, artworks and specially commissioned projects will be on view at three main venues: the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the Neue Nationalgalerie, and the Sculpture Park Berlin_Zentrum. The night part of the exhibition is an open format that will erratically occupy the main venues and other locations, each time using buildings or sites related to or best suited for a particular event. Lectures, performances, concerts, workshops, screenings, and other kinds of presentations will take place every night for the duration of the biennial. The series aims to provide an opportunity for artists and thinkers from diverse fields to test out ideas without the limitations of conventional exhibition space and time as they produce new or remake existing works, speak, or interpret pieces specifically for live performance.

Elsewhere in Germany, the European Kunsthalle in Cologne has announced that, after a two-year founding period led by Nicolaus Schafhausen and Vanessa Joan Müller, the organization will be led by Anders Kreuger, who lives and works in Lund, Sweden, and Vilnius, Lithuania; Bartomeu Mari, who lives and works in Barcelona; and Astrid Wege, who lives and works in Cologne. The trio will outline the European Kunsthalle’s programming and future direction at a press conference on Friday, November 30.
