CALARTS PRESIDENT TO STEP DOWN

The president of the California Institute of the Arts, Steven D. Lavine, announced yesterday that he’ll step down in 2017 after twenty-nine years in the post, reports the Los Angeles Times‘ Carla Rivera. Just about a week ago, the school launched a new art-education startup, Kadenze, which will integrate online courses offered by schools including Stanford, Princeton, UCLA, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

During Lavine’s tenure, the institute’s annual fundraising has tripled and its endowment skyrocketed by 476 percent. In his two years left, he said, he’ll focus on fundraising for scholarships but also on “transforming the school’s governing structure into one that is more transparent, and further increasing diversity.”
