To help resolve the state’s budget deficit, California legislators are considering gutting the California Arts Council, whose funding is crucial for thousands of arts institutions, Jonathan Curiel reports in the San Francisco Chronicle. Even well-endowed museums such as the Asian Art Museum rely on the arts council for support, but key state legislators say they have little choice as they look for “nonessential” budget areas in which to make cuts.
