CATHERINE DAVID TO HEAD WITTE DE WITH

After much speculation, the board of the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam (www.wdw.nl) has announced the appointment of Catherine David as the new director of the eleven-year-old institution. David, who takes over for Bartomeu Marí, intends to sign a three-year contract that begins on January 1, 2002.

Prior to the appointment, David held posts as curator for contemporary art at the Centre Georges Pompidou (www.cnac-gp.org) and the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume (www.paris.org/Musees/JeudePaume/info.html) in Paris before accepting the directorship of Documenta X in 1997. Since then, she has acted as a consultant for the French government at the Direction des Arts Plastiques in Paris and as a guest curator for several international exhibitions, most notably the film and video program at the 24th Bienal de São Paulo in 1998 and “L’État des Choses (1ère partie)” (The state of things [part one]), which took place this past winter at the Kunst-Werke (www.kw-berlin.de) in Berlin. For now, David will not comment about her new position and intends to present her plans for the Witte de With at a press conference in October.
