China Institute Announces Move to Larger Building in Lower Manhattan

The China Institute’s getting a new home in New York: It’ll be leaving its current site in the Upper East Side, and moving to 100 Washington Street, according to the New York Times’ Robin Pogrebin.

The new building—a thirty-six-million-dollar construction—will be designed by Pei Partnership architects, and will give the institute fifty thousand square feet of space (and a three-thousand-square-foot gallery). A library, classrooms, and offices will also all be part of the new design.

Established in 1966, the China Institute “calls itself the nation’s oldest educational institution devoted solely to Chinese culture,” Pogrebin writes. An exhibition titled “Art of the Mountain: Through the Chinese Photographer’s Lens” will kick things off at the new site, early next year.
