Chris Saines, currently the director of the Auckland Art Gallery, has been named the new director of Queensland Art Gallery, reports The Australian. Saines will succeed former director Tony Ellwood, who left to direct the National Gallery of Victoria in July. During Ellwood’s directorship, the Queensland Art Gallery became one of the nation's most popular galleries in 2010, with 1.8 million visitors. Saines worked at Auckland Art Gallery during a $121 million restoration and expansion. His appointment at Queensland has marked the end of a search by the gallery’s board that began after Susan Street was announced as its new chairwoman in August.
