Katharine Reid, director of the Cleveland Museum of Art, surprised staff members and sent a ripple through the art world Tuesday by announcing her retirement, Steven Litt writes in the Plain Dealer. Reid, who became director of the museum in March 2000, said she will stay on until a successor is named. Her announcement comes a month before trustees are to vote on going ahead with a major expansion and renovation. Reid said she wants to give the institution a chance to find fresh leadership if it begins a construction project that could last five years or more.
