College Art Association Announces 2019 Award Recipients

Honorees of this year’s College Art Association awards include Howardena Pindell, Ursula von Rydingsvard, Anna C. Chave, Senga Nengudi, Nancy S. Steinhardt, Edward Sullivan, and Artforum contributing editor Molly Nesbit. The distinctions in art will be presented during the group’s annual conference, which will take place from February 13 to February 16 in New York.

The Artist Award for Distinguished Body of Work went to von Rydingsvard, who has been developing a distinct artistic language through large-scale sculptures in cast bronze, resin, and her characteristic carved cedar for over forty years. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Galerie Lelong, the SCAD Museum of Art, Storm King Art Center, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Pindell—cofounder of the pioneering gallery A.I.R., one of the first black curators at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and a professor at SUNY Stony Brook University—received the Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement. Pindell’s work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Fogg Museum at Harvard University.
