The Contemporary Istanbul art fair has named international curator, art critic, and historian Marc-Olivier Wahler as its new artistic advisor.
Wahler is currently the founder and director of Chalet Society, an exhibition space in Paris. In 1995 he cofounded CAN Centre d’art Neuchâtel, Switzerland, and was as its director until 2000. During his tenure there the venue exhibited artists such as Jonathan Monk, Franz West, Mike Kelley, Ugo Rondinone, and Paul McCarthy.
From 2000 until 2006 Wahler helmed the Swiss Institute in New York, curating exhibitions of Urs Fischer, Takashi Murakami, Jim Shaw, and Aleksandra Mir. Wahler was also from 2006 to 2012 the director of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the founding editor of Palais/Magazine.
Established in 2006 as the first art fair in Turkey, Contemporary Istanbul last year exhibited 108 galleries from twenty-three countries, and brought in eighty thousand visitors.
