Creative Time Raises the Last Flag for Its Yearlong Pledges of Allegiance Project

Creative Time’s nationwide public art project Pledges of Allegiance is coming to a close. For the initiative, which officially launched on Flag Day, June 14, last year, the New York–based nonprofit commissioned sixteen artists to create flags that draw attention to an issue that the artist is passionate about in the current political climate. The flags were then flown at participating cultural institutions across the country.

The organization raised the project’s last flag, artist Josephine Meckseper’s Untitled (Flag 2), on July 3. Meckseper’s work is a collage of an American flag and the fragments of one of her earlier pieces, Goodbye to Language. It features a black-dripped color field, resembling a map of the United States that is divided in two. Commenting on her inspiration for the flag, Meckseper said that it is meant to represent how polarized America has become under the Trump administration.

The flag will be on view at thirteen cultural institutions and universities across eleven states: Florida, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Texas.
