The Denver Art Museum has hired Rebecca R. Hart as its new curator of modern and contemporary art. Hart will oversee the Denver Art Museum’s modern and contemporary art collection, among other responsibilities. She was curator of contemporary art at the Detroit Institute of Arts since 2005, where she led an initiative to acquire more contemporary works, by the likes of Matthew Barney, Julie Mehretu, and Shirin Neshat. At Detroit, she also coordinated Neshat’s major, mid-career retrospective in 2013, and organized the Getty Conservation Institute Round-Table this year.
“I immediately sensed a kinship with the people of Denver who engage in arts and culture with a sense of curiosity and adventure,” said Hart. “Having lived in the Miami area and Detroit, with work experience in Oaxaca, Mexico, I am particularly interested in partnering with the Hispanic community. It will be an honor to develop exhibitions and a program of acquisitions that resonate with the rich heritage of Colorado.”
