Dia Art Foundation Awarded Mellon Foundation Grant

The Dia Art Foundation announced today that it is the recipient of a $735,000 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant. The funding will be used to establish a new archives program and support other initiatives, as well as allow Dia to appoint an archivist and postdoctoral scholar for a three-year term.

Dia Foundation director Jessica Morgan said “this funding provides the necessary resources to strengthen Dia’s position as a platform for artistic production, scholarship, and discourse, contributing to a holistic understanding of the environment—as ecology, geography, and social space, as well as a locus for art, experience, and sociopolitical awareness.”

Founded in 1974, the Dia Art Foundation provides long-term support to artists and is committed to presenting and preserving art projects. Among the works it has commissioned are Walter De Maria’s The Lightning Field, 1977, and The Broken Kilometer, 1979. Among the numerous sites it maintains is Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, 1970, in Utah.
