Director for 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale Announced

Alejandro Aravena has been appointed the director and curator of the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale. Aravena is a Chilean architect whose firm, Alejandro Aravena Architects, has been responsible for several buildings at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile where Aravena graduated from in 1992 with his degree in architecture. Other projects he has completed include buildings at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas and a Montessori school. In 2013 he won a competition to design the Teheran Stock Exchange in Iran.

From 2000 until 2005 he was also a professor at Harvard University where he created the social housing initiative ELEMENTAL along with engineer Andres Iacobelli. His work has previously been featured in the 2007 São Paulo Biennale, the 2008 Milano Triennale, as well as the 2008 and 2012 editions of the Venice Architecture Biennale. Since 2009 he has also served on the jury for the Pritzker Prize.
