Documenta Artwork Causes Chaos for Kassel Firefighers

After spotting white smoke billowing from a tower of the Fridericianum Museum in Kassel last weekend, alarmed residents called the fire department, Monopol reports. Signaling the opening of Documenta 14 in Athens, the artificial smoke is part of an installation by artist Daniel Knorr titled Expiration Movement and will be produced throughout the duration of the quinquennial art show.

The smoke generator already prompted over thirty concerned calls to the Kassel fire department, said fire official Norbert Schmitz on Monday. Since the department is required to respond to every call to determine whether there is an actual fire, it has reached an agreement with Documenta. “The fire department will first call the museum’s security personnel; only if the situation is unclear, will firefighters be dispatched,” Schmitz said. He also explained that if the smoke was coming from an actual fire it would be black. Despite the confusion, Schmit said, “It is good that the public cares about it.”
