Eight Artists Win Canada’s 2015 Governor General’s Awards
This year’s eight winners of the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts in Canada have been announced, reports the CBC’s Jeanette Kelly. The winners are visual artists Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Rober Racine, Robert Houle, Micah Lexier, Sandra Meigs, and Reva Stone, as well as jewelry artist Paul McClure and curator Louise Déry.
“It’s, I guess, very satisfying to all of a sudden get this recognition,” Lozano-Hemmer told Kelly, adding, “As a narcissistic megalomaniac it fits nicely with my personality. No I’m kidding, but these awards are always received with a sense of distance not really happening to your own career.”
The Canada Council has commissioned short films on each of the winners, directed by award-winning Canadian filmmakers, and the National Gallery of Canada will feature the awardees’ work in an exhibition later this year.
